Craig Levein has called up a striker ahead of Sunday’s glamour friendly against Brazil, Peterborough’s Craig Mackail-Smith. 

The striker – who has scored 27 goals for the Posh so far this season – discovered the news today after confirmation of his eligibility. He will play for Peterborough on Friday night against Bristol Rovers and immediately join the Scotland squad in London.

Smith qualifies through his Edinburgh-born grandmother, Margaret, and after planning to watch the Scotland game at home cannot believe he could now be facing the Samba superstars.

“I am absolutely over the moon and my gran will be the proudest gran in the world,” he said. “She has followed my career since childhood and always hoped – like I would – that I would one day be able to play for Scotland.

“I knew the Scotland scout [Michael Oliver] had been watching me this past year and I am delighted it has come to fruition. I certainly never imagined that I would be playing against Brazil on Sunday – the plan was to kick back on the sofa and watch it on TV.

“I have had a really good season and this just caps it off for me. Hopefully I will get a chance to show the Scotland fans what I am capable of.”

He will not get the chance to travel to La Manga as he will be playing for the Posh on Friday night away to Bristol Rovers. He will join up with the squad in London straight after that game.

This shows that Levein has done his ground work and then his home work to find anyone available to play for Scotland. Sadly we seem to have to drop down the leagues to find someone eligible for Scotland.

Hopefully this latest find will find the way to the back of the net when he pulls on the dark blue jersey.
