McDiarmid Park

Yet another game has been cancelled at St. Johnstone’s McDiarmid Park with this afternoon’s game with Aberdeen falling victim to a waterlogged pitch.

This is the fifth game to be called off for various reasons at McDiarmid Park this season for various reasons. They did manage to play a game on Wednesday when they took on Partick Thistle, although that was only played after two cancellations.

With SPL already having to plan on Friday afternoon kick offs this situation at Perth can only make things worse.

It will also be interesting to see how the SPL react to this situation, which is getting beyond a joke.

Over the last couple of seasons they have had to deal with Motherwell’s awful pitch, and they were given a suspended fine of £50000 for the condition of their pitch and a couple of cancellations last season.

It would seem bizarre if no action was taken against St. Johnstone for not meeting the SPL requirement for having adequate pitch protection.

This situation also opens up another debate on whether it is time to consider a move away from natural grass and use the modern 3G and 4G pitches which are being used at Airdrie, Alloa and Stenhousemuir. That is maybe for another day….
