Samaras celebrates

Celtic extended their lead at the top of the table thanks to two goals from Samaras in the second half to win the Old Firm Derby.

The first half was a poor affair with the most outstanding stat was the one that said Celtic hadn’t managed to muster an attempt on goal, while Rangers had only come up with four, with one on target.

The one on target came from a Lee McCulloch header which looped goalwards only for Izuagerra to head it on to his own cross bar and then see it bounce clear.

The second half saw Celtic start the better side having obviously been given clear instructions from the coaching staff and it was no surprise when they took the lead.

A long ball split Bougherra and Weir allowing Samaras to run clear and for some reason McGregor rushed out of his box. This allowed Samaras to slip past him and then roll the ball into the empty net.

The lead was doubled when Samaras was tripped just inside the box by Bougherra and the Greek stepped up to take the kick himself and his perfect kick left the keeper with no chance.

Celtic saw the game out comfortably enough in a game that was no real advert for Scottish football.

The one up side for the game was the impeccably observed minute’s silence before the game to mark the 40^th Anniversary of the Ibrox disaster which saw 66 people killed in January 1971.
