After weeks of speculation Aberdeen and Mark McGhee have finally parted company, the board must have heard yesterday’s alarm bells ringing.

All three members of the Dons coaching team have left the club, along with McGhee goes Assistant boss Scott Leitch and Goalie coach Colin Meldrum.

 

As we reported last night the Dons are second bottom of the table on goal difference ahead of Hamilton Accies. They have lost their last six games and have only taken four point from the last 39 – relegation form in anyone’s books.

 

Chief Exec Stewart Milne said tonight, “On behalf of everyone at the Club, I would like to thank Mark, Scott and Colin for their time at Aberdeen.

 

“It goes without saying that everyone at Aberdeen Football Club wishes Mark, Scott and Colin every success in the future.”

 

McGhee moved to the Dons in the summer of 2009 after two successful years at Motherwell where he took the Steelmen to the Europa League two seasons in a row.

 

Last season was a disappointment for Dons fans as they saw their side slide from a top six finish under Jimmy Calderwood and finished 9^th.

 

A summer of re-building, including the purchase of Paul Hartley, has failed to halt the slide and it looks as though the Dons board don’t believe McGhee has the ability to cope with a relegation dogfight and have taken the step of getting rid of him.

 

Where now for McGhee? When he returned to Motherwell he talked about re-building his reputation after struggling to get a job in England for a number of years. The job at Motherwell did help but this performance at Pittodrie could be the end for the Dons legend.
