Ward was released by local rivals Stoke City at the end of last season, and during a recent trial at Wigan Athletic he appeared against the Saddlers in a 'behind closed-doors' friendly.

Colin Lee is no stranger to Ward, as the pair both worked together when they were at Leicester City during the mid-1990's.

Ward has lined up against the Saddlers on numerous occasions during his career, including a play-off semi-final leg at the Bescot where Ward had a terrible match, letting in 4 goals.

However, Lee obviously rates Ward highly. Speaking to the Official Walsall FC Site about his latest recruit, he said: "Gavin will be a good addition to the squad. I am expecting him to push Jimmy Walker hard for his first team place."

The 32-year-old 'keeper, who was born in Sutton Coldfield, has landed a 5-month deal, but if he impresses he could extend his contract at the Bescot.
