Walsall today signed left winger Grant Smith on loan from mighty Bristol City. Fans will be hoping he lasts longer than the last Smith we signed, Paul from Gillingham, although they shouldn't get their hopes up. Grant has already played for ten clubs - Wycombe Wanderers, Reading, Heart of Midlothian, Livingston, Clydebank (loan), Sheffield United, Halifax Town (loan), Plymouth Argyle (loan), Swindon Town, Bristol City - at the tender age of 25.
The Scot has started a mere five games for City this season, after joining from Swindon where he netted 10 goals in 23 starts, second only to the prolific Sam Parkin. It's rumoured he attracted the interests of Leeds and Sheffield Wednesday, which poses the questions; why did he sign for City? and why don't they want him? Supposedly a set piece specialist, he's Merson's fourth loan signing of the transfer window.
