Look at that lush green grass set against the back drop of the towering Purple Stand. Will we be seeing the same picture come February 2004?

While the gutter press mock Paul Merson for talking about "Total Football", the ground staff at the Bescot are preparing a surface that is fit for the beautiful game.

With fans saying how well the lads are passing the ball around in the  pre-season games, it is great to know that our home pitch will be suiting our style of football.  

Its turbulent past has been well catalogued, but the temporary pitch put down in February has gone, and we now have a new one fit for the kind of football that Oakes, Osborn, Merson and Samways say has attracted them to Walsall.

Even Chelsea had pitch problems last year, and despite employing experts while re-laying the pitch and installing a state of the art drainage system, Chelsea accept they may have to put another new pitch down come February 2004. 

 We can't afford to take the same steps as Chelsea. Should we put so much faith in our pitch? Has Colin Lee got a back up plan? We had to play certain players to suit the pitch last season. Have we got the same kind of flexibility this year?
