Coventry came unstuck in wet and gloomy conditions at Brickfields as hosts Plymouth made them pay for defensive lapses and a high error count.

Trailing 19-6 at the break, Cov twice forced their way back into the game with tries from line-out drives only to hand the initiative straight back to Albion with too many turnovers and missed tackles.

Albion enjoyed all the early pressure, but it was Cov who broke the deadlock after 16 minutes when their first attacking position produced a penalty for Caolan Ryan from inside the home 22.

The lead was short lived, however, as a Gaston Mieres clearance was charged down and Albion centre Jake Murphy ran in for a try which Matt Shepherd converted.

And Cov were hit for two more tries in the space of three minutes as their defence went missing, Murphy claiming the first on the end of a decisive break by Shepherd who then sprinted away down the left flank for the second, cutting inside to the posts to leave himself a simple conversion for a 19-3 advantage, Cov closed out the half on the front foot, but after three line-outs inside the Albion 22 produced nothing, they had to settle for a second Ryan penalty on the whistle.

Matt Price was on the end of a line-out drive for Cov’s first try six minutes after the restart, but five minutes later Murphy ghosted through a gap in the visitors’ defence to complete his hat-trick and restore the gap to 13 points.
