A Saturday that saw the two London derbies  finish, as close as expected with a winning margin of just 3 points in both games. In keeping of the nature of the league this season there was another change of leader with just 6 points separating the top 6 sides.

It was a short lived revival for two of the bottom 3 sides as both Blaydon and Cinderford had large away defeats. It is even tougher at the bottom with just 4 points separating the bottom 6 sides.

Whether it was a sign of the change in the weather but the feature on most games seems to be on dominant packs-if you had one you won. Interesting to see if this trend continues.

Hartpury College surged back to the top of the league after an impressive 1st half display against Ampthill. Winger Jonas Mikalcius led the way with a hat-trick within 20 minutes, another try by full-back Gareth Thompson and his goal-kicking always gave the impetus to the home side. A better second half display came to nought for Ampthill as they came across the meanest defence in the league.

Close on the leaders heels are Richmond after beating an in form Blackheath side up to then unbeaten for 8 games, by a 3 point margin. It was the power of the home pack that proved the difference that gave them the edge against the second meanest defence in the league. Not for the first time this season new recruit flanker Jack Allcock with his 2 tries proved the catalyst. It is a measure of how close it is in this league is that Blackheath are still 4th after the defeat still only 4 points behind the leaders.

The other London derby between Esher and Rosslyn Park proved equally close with just 3 points between the sides. Esher, on the back of some recent large victories found a Park side more resolute. Fly-half Tom Whelan controlled the game using the wind well to help Park to a 20-5 half-time lead. A late second half fightback saw Esher come close but Rosslyn Park held out, moving them up to 5th spot just 4 points off the lead, with Esher dropping down to 3rd place.

Leading the chasing pack behind the top six is Hull Ionians, who put on a bonus point display in defeating a struggling Henley Hawks side. With the home pack in fine form it was only a matter of time in the second half before the bonus point tries were scored. A defeat that moves Henley down to 13th place just 2 points ahead of the relegation zone.

Plymouth Albion found the visit of Darlington Mowden Park not to their liking as Park regained some confidence with a deserved victory over the home side. After a tight 1st half the Park pack started to take control earning a late penalty try to seal the game.

Coventry Rugby put their recent woes  behind them as they nilled a Blaydon side, who were unable to turn plenty of possession into points. Despite the advantage of the wind in that 1st half a resolute Coventry defence  denied  Blaydon any points and Matt Jones was able to kick the home side into a half-time lead. With the wind at their backs and confidence climbing Coventry ran in 4,2nd half tries for a well-deserved victory. Blaydon’s defeat drops them back to bottom place.

Another side unable to build on the previous week’s win Cinderford, came a cropper at Fylde, who ran in 7 tries. A good start by the home pack saw them race into an early 14-0 lead. A brief second half fightback by Cinderford came to nought as Fylde turned the screw running in 5 further tries for an easy win, dropping Cinderford down to 15th place.

A measure of how tight it is at both ends of the table is that previous bottom side Loughborough Students by dint of their bonus point win over Wharfedale moved up to 11th place, yet still only 4 points off the bottom. Another dominant pack led the way especially in the second half, with Wharfedale now dropping into the final relegation spot.
