Coventry have made no secret of their intention to mount a National League One promotion challenge, but rugby director Phil Maynard insists that he is looking no further than tomorrow’s opening game of the season at home to Wharfedale.

“Our pre-season was a bit of a gamble, trying all those games, but in the end it worked out well,” said Maynard (right). “The signs have been very encouraging and the coaches are happy with the squad.

“We are well prepared, and all we’ve got to now is deliver. But of course there are some early season nerves and at this stage, nobody is looking beyond tomorrow’s game. We only need to concentrate on getting that right.

“Wharfedale are always a difficult team to beat and we can take nothing for granted.”

Four of Cov’s summer signings will make their league debuts – centre James Ticknell, winger Ryan Hough, second row Courtney Roberts and No.8 Tom Preece – with a new-look bench from last season comprising backs Caolan Ryan and Harrison Lee-Everton, prop Terry Sigley, hooker Devlin Hope and back row Alex Woodburn.

Selection involved some difficult decisions and there is no place in the match-day 20 for Cliffie Hodgson and Chad Thorne, who have both been nursing knocks, while in some positions injuries made the final choice slightly easier – Adam Canning, the latest addition to the list, rested for the week after coming off in last week’s win over Ealing.
