Scott Morgan ready to dust off boots and lead from the front

Head coach Scott Morgan is dusting off his boots in readiness for a return to action as Coventry count the cost of last weekend’s win over Macclesfield.
Injuries to Roan van Heerden and Sam Pailor have put both in doubt for Saturday’s trip to Esher, stretching second row resources and making Morgan’s return more pressing after five games out with a calf injury.
“It looks like I’ll have to get my boots back on,” said the Wales international lock. “I probably could have been all right for Macclesfield, but I thought I’d give myself an extra week and I should be available for Esher if I’m picked!
“There are only eight games to go now and it will be great to get back on with the boys at some stage.”
Morgan was frustrated at how Cov’s performance panned out in the 35-15 win over Macclesfield, taking their unbeaten run in National League One to 18 games, after seeing his side go 14 points up in seven minutes.
“There’s nothing better than scoring in the first minute and then quickly getting a second try,” he said. “I’ve been asked this question before, and I don’t think there is ever a case of scoring too many points too soon.
“We then went 21 points up after 22 minutes, so I don’t see how that can ever be viewed as a negative. It just reinforces that what we were doing at the start was the right thing, and it’s when you go off the game plan and go off script that is the part I find hard to understand.
“Those first three tries came about because of patterns. We’ve shown that when we’re doing the things we do well, we are a very good team, but at the moment we’re killing ourselves by making basic errors, forcing things and moving away from the game plan too easily. It was all a bit messy on Saturday.
“I think we need to stop looking around us, worrying about what others like Ealing are doing, and just focus on ourselves and see what comes of it.
“If we don’t do what we need to it doesn’t matter what anyone else does, and we have just got to get back to where we were before the last few weeks.”

Well done, Scott. The injury situation is serious, I grant, but you can't help but notice that the dip in form over the last handful of games has coincided with Scott not being in the squad. Is his forceful leadership the key?
Certainly his presence on the field at Esher can only be a substantial contribution towards a better and more dynamic performance.
Come on Cov! Let's go for an 18 game unbeaten sequence.

Great news about Scott and also that Ed Milne could be back soon as well.
Good to hear that Scott could be on his way back and ed. however contraversally I don't really buy into the whole 'we play better' when Scotts on the pitch theory. I've seen just as many games/ performances where we have played well/ poor with/ without Scott being on the field. There have been many times where the game plan has also gone to pot when he's been on the field than when he hasn't.
So whilst we are obviously doing very well this season, and he's still a great player to have on the pitch, I just haven't seen enough evidence of our overall performance/results on the day being significantly Influenced with him playing.
But please don't get me wrong, I'm not being critical of scots playing ability or coaching ability. I just think maybe we create a bit of an 'urban legend' thing around him playing. :-)

Nige I really do think that Scott has been one of the really important men to be involved in Cov since Derek Eves time, an inspiration both on and off the field.
Cov keep talking about game plans and Scott is the one who draws up this plan so if it goes to pot on the field he should be able to sort players out there and then. And if he can't keep the plan going while close to the players when can he. in weeks when we did not stick to this game plan he has been on and off the pitch?
Zin- I agree with you completely, his influence and connections, along with a lot of hard work, have brought us to the best point the club has been in for years.

Scott is a great asset to the club and team and a great player we are in a great position I just don't know what the game plan is and how do we stick to it?
The game plan should be "Stop kicking bloody possession away" I cringe when Barry Davies has ball in hand.
You're right, Nige, in that it is difficult to ascribe full credit to Scott insofar as the standard of performance during the game is concerned, but the recent run of games has clearly indicated that something fairly drastic is needed.
Whether Scott can provide it is open to debate, but right now we need all hands to the pump.
I so much hope that we can turn things round, starting this weekend at Esher. Like all supporters, I am hoping with all my being that we can play with style, pace, incisiveness, in fact - just like we have been for most of the season.

I don't care how we play as long as we win. Winning with style, sure we all want that, but as long as we win that is all that matters.

I feel we need Scott on the field to have a little "chat" with the referee now and again to let him know what a nice chap he is. It was noticeable that during the Cinderford and Blaydon home games the opposition players had extensive "chats" with Sir, and there was much derision shown at some decisions given against Coventry. Home bias maybe. But just an observation.
I'd like to hope that matt, our quiet and retiring hooker, as pack leader, can have a chat with sir. :-)

Keep all 15 on the pitch for the whole game something called discipline perhaps that's a good game plan to start with
I will say only this zinzan, from a man who was constantly saying to his players not to give penalties away and someone who should be respected , not for the first time in his cov career did he get into a full fight which turned into a 30 man episode. This may not be the best way to bring down his playing career.
Totally agree Mark.I only had a handful of penalties given against me in over twenty years of playing senior Rugby, but there again I did play back row (expert).
I'm afraid I find this considerably poor and less-than-acceptable from Scott. Just when we needed to show a concerted effort in a team performance to return to our dominant, and winning, style of play, he has a continuing spat with an opposition player which eventually leads to a punch up and a red card for him.
He should be feeling absolutely mortified and very very humiliated. Any thoughts he might have had of galvanising the team and of leading by example as a route to earning their respect, has now vanished. And all because he has brought the situation on himself. This was just about the last thing the team and the club needed.

I was at the game. Morgan landed three of four clear punches to the head of the Esher hooker without reply before the Esher man finally had to defend himself with a punch. Technically the ref was correct to send both of for punching but morally the Esher player should have been allowed to defend himself.
To hear that Morgan is actually Head Coach is utterly incredible. His behaviour was that of a violent thug and your much respected club will lose much of that respect if you continue to employ a person like him.

Interesting views, Amazing! I presume you are an Esher supporter? In any event, the sequence as you describe it is simply too unethical, to say the least, to be tolerable, justified and vindicated. This really is a horrible situation.

the penalty against Coventry was given for punching in retaliation so that suggests that the Esher player Neil Sweeney was doing something equally bad, although obviously not seen by Amazing but seen by the Asst Ref.
Whilst there was Definately something that provoked Scott, I think that most people would agree that his reaction seemed quite out of proportion to the initial provocation. Quite simply, he lost it. And whichever way you look at it, as the head coach you have to set standards and an example for other players. This I'm sure we would all agree, (including Scott) is not an example for other players to follow.
I know for a fact that if the situation had of been reversed and at the BPA, the crowd would have been baying for the person who was throwing all the punches to be red carded.

Easy to comment but in the heat of the moment I think we have All been there in some capacity.
It's inevitable these things happen in "the heat of the moment" but there are the following factors to be taken into account:-
- Scott is Head Coach and therefore cannot escape the responsibility which goes with it
- he is a senior figure and has so much experience to call upon for the benefit of the team
- the article described him as coming back "to lead from the front"

I shouldn't worry too much about 'Amazing!', CB. He leaps around from board to board pi55ing off the locals on a regular basis. Now he's decided to grace us with his presence.

Well, Amazing!, after what appeared to be a constructive and well thought out posting, you have resorted to the use of invective in your response to Kimbo, which does your credibility no good whatsoever and now makes me very sceptical about your original posting.

morgan did lose it and in my opinion this was as a result of the pressure with the performance. All afternoon he was up and down on the side of the pitch , sitting in the stand then back down to pitch level, constantly telling the players..no penalties..for morgan this season has been another learning curve personally being the figurehead of the successful team and all the pressure and frustration that goes with the position, when things aren't going well.
