...Cov get promotion

Afternoons like last Saturday at Wharfedale were made for the largely unsung heroes of any side, the front five forwards – and Coventry second row Tom Poole was in his element in the muddy close-quarter exchanges.

“It’s the job I signed to do,” said Poole, one of the true workhorses in the pack who is in his third season with Cov after joining from junior club Kettering. “It comes with my position, it’s what you do.

“Saturday was definitely a hard slog and it took everything we have as a group to get through – it was just draining.

“It wasn’t much fun for the backs and I felt sorry for the wingers standing out there. It was a real ‘roll up your sleeves’ time, and we got our heads down and just got stuck in – it was an experience to play in, but I do enjoy those sort of games.

“I’m not there for any applause, just to enjoy it and get as far as I can go, and if I pick up a bit of recognition along the way it will be a bonus.”

Cov’s 17-13 victory – their first ever at Wharfedale – took their current winning run to 15 games as they chase table-topping Ealing, and Poole insists the belief that they can go on to win the title is there despite a tough finish that sees them play all the other current top five sides in succession, three of the games away from home.

“Last season, and definitely in my first season here, that would have got to us,” he said. “There were elements of doubt creeping in about facing these sides even before we began playing.

“Now that doesn’t happen, we are only concerned with ourselves, and we are relishing that challenge.

“It’s a really tough league to get out of, only one up and nothing else to play for with no cups, but we can do it, and I think everyone in the squad has the same belief. We believe we can beat any team in the league if we stick to our systems.
