...selectors a headache

Coventry's selectors are spoiled for choice in the wing positions with the current form of Dan Rundle causing headaches of the more welcome kind.

The 22-year-old flyer, who caught the eye last season when he scored two top-drawer tries for Tynedale on their visit to the Butts Park Arena, has struggled to nail down a regular starting place since joining Cov in the summer with the destructive power of Will Hurrell and all-round game of Dom Lespierre, currently the club’s top try scorer on 13, seeing them generally viewed as first choice.

But Rundle has certainly put forward a strong case in the last two games, setting up a try for Rob Knox with a game-changing 80-metre run and then scoring a try himself after going on as a replacement for the last quarter at Blackheath before scoring twice – including a superb 40m finish – in the first eight minutes to put Cov on their way to victory over Loughborough Students last weekend.

“I’m just glad that I got my start against Loughborough and got to showcase what I can do,” said Rundle, who concedes that he has found it tough over the first half of the season.

“It’s been difficult for me, mentally and physically. We’ve got two brilliant wingers in Will, who is like a local hero, and Dom who is top try scorer at the club, so it’s been hard to break into the team.

“But if I take my chances and score, hopefully I’ll be knocking on the door.

“I’m still miles away from being the best, I never think of myself as that, I just go out there and try to give it all, and hopefully do the right things.”

Despite the competition for places, Rundle – who began playing rugby as a ten-year-old at Westoe in the north-east before moving on to Tynedale – has no regrets at moving down to the Midlands.

“I love it down here,” he said. “I’ve been welcomed so well and I’m trying to give it all back now. Cov is such a more professional outfit that Tynedale in everything they do, the training and the support they get.
