Not quite the points fest that the form book suggested it might be, but still another valuable away win for Coventry who had come up short on their three previous visits to Priory Park.

As at Cinderford a fortnight earlier, Cov failed to reach anywhere near the heights of their home performance the week before and it needed a two-try salvo in the space of three second-half minutes to spare their blushes against the division’s bottom side.

It was a game which brought back memories of last season’s defeat at Worthing, but this time Cov had the inner strength to pull through and sidestep the banana skin which, unconvincing as they were on the day, has to be progress.

Cov were unable to finish off a number of early chances, centre Rob Knox creating havoc with his pacey runs through midfield, and had one or two of these stuck, it might have been a different afternoon all together.

But the longer the first half went on, the more encouragement it gave to Macclesfield, and with Cov’s indiscipline costing two yellow cards, the home side deservedly reached half-time with a 13-6 lead they were in no hurry to surrender.

Even after Cov had fired back to go ahead inside the final quarter, Macclesfield had opportunities to go back in front or, at worst, salvage their first bonus point of a so far winless season.

But they took the wrong option on a couple of occasions and Cov’s defence, probably the best part of their game on the day with Dom Lespierre outstanding, held firm to allow them to take a somewhat fortunate win.
