Jonathan Woodgate says he's happy at Middlesbrough, but won't rule out a return to Real Madrid. The centre-back has been at the Riverside Stadium on loan since the summer.

But he says the thought of partnering World Player of the Year Fabio Cannavaro at the heart of the Madrid defence has crossed his mind.

Woodgate spent two seasons at the Santiago Bernabeu following a £13million move from Newcastle in the summer of 2004.

But his spell there was ruined by a string of injuries, and since returning to England he's been in impressive form - starting 18 Premiership games this season.

He told Marca: "Moving to Real was a great opportunity, and it's still not gone totally. Maybe if I'd been fit more and been able to play more in those two years, I could have helped the team win titles. It's a part of my life that's not complete, and you never know about the future."

Now Woodgate must wait until the summer to see if he'll be needed back in Madrid, or whether Boro will take up their option to buy him permanently.

"When I arrived it was for one season now we'll see what happens in the summer. Nobody knows what will happen because I've got a year left on my Real contract."
