Middlesbrough boss Gareth Southgate will stick to his principles as he attempts to bounce back from Wednesday night's Carling Cup disaster.

The 36-year-old took full responsibility for the embarrassing Carling Cup second round defeat by Coca-Cola League Two Notts County after making eight changes to his side.
However, he was adamant that the team he fielded should have been good enough to see off Steve Thompson's team, and will not abandon his blueprint for sustained success as he prepares for Saturday's Barclays Premiership clash with Blackburn.
Southgate said: "It tells me I have got to be strong enough to stick with what I firmly believe in.
"I have got to be strong enough to pick a team and a system of playing that is right for us.
"I will have to analyse whether I did all of those things over the next 24 hours or so.
"But you have to recover very quickly because Saturday is very important to us.
"I have said all along, we will be judged by what we do in the league - I still believe that.
"Saturday is more important to me than Wednesday night was - that is obvious because of the team I put out - but that does not mean to say I was not disappointed, to put it mildly, to go out in the manner we did."
The infuriating inconsistency which has blighted Boro in recent seasons has shown little sign of abating since Southgate replaced Steve McClaren at the helm.
A home victory over champions Chelsea and creditable draws at Arsenal and Bolton have been accompanied by an opening day collapse at Reading, a 4-0 home defeat by Portsmouth and last night's mishap.
However, Southgate was remaining philosophical as he started to pick up the pieces.
He said: "That's football isn't it? Wednesday night was a typical example of cup football.
"If you are not bang on, you can be beaten by anybody on a one-off occasion.
"We have done that ourselves in the past. We have had some great runs, and on Wednesday, we were the victims of it.
"But I have experienced enough highs and lows as a player and it is no different as a manager.
"Obviously, you take probably a little bit more to heart, but I did as a captain. The difference is that the ultimate responsibility lies with me.
"But I am big enough to deal with that. That is the responsibility of the job."
Australian striker Mark Viduka took the captain's armband against County with George Boateng injured and Jonathan Woodgate rested, and he admitted things had just not gone his side's way.
Viduka said: "The result was disappointing. I think when you look at the game, it was just one of those nights.
"Everyone says when a smaller club beats a bigger one, the team did not take the game seriously.
"But we really tried out there. We were desperate to get the equaliser, to score and just to play a bit of football, but it was not our night."
Viduka, who was a target for derby rivals Newcastle during the transfer window, was handed just his third start of the season in the game, and admits he is desperate to return to the fore against Mark Hughes' men.
He said: "I just want to be involved. I was on the bench against Chelsea and managed to make an impact when I came on and got another appearance against Arsenal. I want to be playing.
"It is going to take a bit of time as Gareth works out what he wants to do, but hopefully we can get a win this weekend."
