Jonathan Woodgate will skipper his beloved Middlesbrough on Saturday after Gareth Southgate fixed it for him to lead his hometown side out at Bolton.
The Boro manager has revealed Woodgate demonstrated all the qualities he was looking for in George Boateng's deputy during last weekend's defensive display at Arsenal.
The 26-year-old Middlesbrough-born centre-back slotted into the Boro backline as if he had played there throughout his career.
It was a debut of immense composure and it enabled his new side to go through 90 minutes without conceding a goal from open play for the first time this season.
Prior to Woodgate's arrival, the Boro defence had shipped eight in three Barclays Premiership outings and looked seriously lacking in leadership.
His impact where it matters - on the field of play - was instant, with the Teessiders repelling waves of Arsenal attacks before the Gunners levelled from the penalty spot.
That rearguard action was even more impressive due to the absence of Boateng for the final 26 minutes due to a red card.
When weighing up the candidates to fill in for the Dutchman at Bolton, Southgate narrowed his options down to Woodgate, Mark Schwarzer and teenage midfielder Lee Cattermole. Woodgate, currently on loan at Boro from Real Madrid, was delighted when he was selected to wear the armband.
"When I told him his eyes lit up," revealed Southgate.
"It's obviously a boyhood dream come true and I was glad to be able to 'Jim'll Fix It' for him.
"He went straight off to phone his dad and tell him, so you could see how much it meant to him."
Revealing his reasons for choosing the former Leeds and Newcastle defender to take temporary charge, the manager added: "It was a difficult decision in that there were a couple of other people that I considered for the role.
"It was an easy task though to find the attributes I was looking for.
"Jonathan showed at Arsenal last week the calmness and strength of character he possesses. Not just in his own performance but the affect he had on the players around him was massive.
"To play like that against a player like Thierry Henry was an eye-opener, even for myself.
"It was his first competitive game of the season. The composure he showed in that match proved he would be able to cope with the added responsibility."
England winger Stewart Downing will not feature against Bolton due to a groin injury, but his absence gives talented teenager Adam Johnson another chance to impress on the left flank.
The Reebok Stadium is a happy hunting ground for the Sunderland-born winger, who scored his first goal for the club in last season's corresponding fixture.
Southgate's other anticipated change from the XI that held the Gunners is Cattermole in place of the suspended Boateng.
Pulling off that surprise draw has given the Boro squad a timely boost ahead of tomorrow's trip to Bolton.
Southgate said: "The great thing is that after the Arsenal result the whole squad is really looking forward to the next game.
"It was a gutsy performance and that's exactly what you need when you go to Bolton.
"We are prepared to stand up and fight but we will go there to play football as well.
"Having beaten Chelsea, taken a point at Arsenal and been two goals up at Reading we know that we can go to Bolton and perform.
"What we want to see is to go there and give them a real test. I feel that we will get better and better as the season goes on."
