Middlesbrough skipper George Boateng has today been told to rest his injured knee for a ten day period after consulting a specialist.

The 31-year-old midfielder will be assessed again at the end of that period.

Boateng was hurt in a challenge on Arsenal's Freddie Ljungberg which earned him a second yellow card of the game on Saturday and saw him stretchered off.

He would have been suspended for this weekend's Barclays Premiership trip to Bolton anyway, but will now miss the Carling Cup tie against Notts County as well.

Manager Gareth Southgate appointed Boateng as his replacement as captain following his retirement from playing.
