Gareth Southgate aims to add another string to his bow days after Middlesbrough's first victory under the former England defender when they beat champions Chelsea.

Portsmouth are tonight's visitors to the Riverside but they are regarded by fans as Boro's bogey team as the north east club have beaten them just once in the Premiership.

New manager Southgate said: "People keep telling me that Portsmouth have a hoodoo over us. I don't know about that. We drew with them here last season, and we did the season before that.

"I know we haven't got a good record at Fratton Park, but we are at home tonight and we want to try to record another win at the Riverside.

"Maybe expectations are too high when we play Portsmouth. The bottom line is that the match will be just as difficult as the one against Chelsea last week.

"You can't expect to coast through and take three points against anybody. But if we display the same attitude we did against Chelsea, then we can beat anybody on our own ground."

Southgate is relishing the prospect of pitting his wits against Pompey boss Harry Redknapp.

He said: "Harry has done a fantastic job twice now for Portsmouth. They had a great finish to last season. They looked dead and buried when he went back, and to escape from that position they were in was phenomenal.

"Since then he has had the opportunity to build in the summer. So Portsmouth will come to our ground full of confidence. It's up to us to play well enough to take that confidence away from them."

Southgate expects to finalise the loan for Middlesbrough-born Woodgate today and the 26-year-old injury-ravaged defender could make his debut at Arsenal on September 9.

Tonight's game marks goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer's 300th league appearance for Boro.

The Australian international was signed by former boss Bryan Robson from Bradford City for £1.2million in 1997 and is now in his 11th season with the Teesside club.

Southgate said: "He is undoubtedly one of the top keepers in the league. He's a keeper who gives defenders confidence. He's not one for standing on his line and seeing what happens. He comes out and commands an area where some other goalkeepers fear to tread.

"I know there was talk of him leaving last January, and I must admit, as a player, I did talk to him and try to talk him into staying.

"Mark had his reasons for wanting to leave, and I suppose I was a bit selfish in asking him to stay. But the situation calmed down and all the players were delighted he has stayed."

Southgate is expected to bring back Schwarzer's Australian colleague, Mark Viduka, possibly at the exclusion of young defender Andrew Davies, and revert to a 4-4-2 formation.

Davies had a storming game for the first hour in last week's win against Chelsea but Southgate made it clear he will not be forgetting the club's talented youngsters this season.

He said: "Andrew Davies and Andrew Taylor were excellent against Chelsea and I'm delighted they have carried on where they left off last season. Their contributions were just as important as those of anyone else.

"We've also got Lee Cattermole fit again and he is another who is important to us. I know the rapport he has with the crowd."

MIDDLESBROUGH v PORTSMOUTH NO-LOSE BET

It's been a great season at the bookies so far, with plenty of profit to show for my endeavours and a bag full of free bets as well. The only problem is that it's Bank Holiday Monday and Mrs H has gone off to Ikea to blow all my profit.

So the best thing to do in that scenario is to make some more and we can do that very easily on tonight's Middlesbrough v Portsmouth match.

Betfred are offering new online customers a bonus of up to £100, completely free with your first bet. Whatever you win from your first bet, Betfred will give you an extra 100% on top, up to the value of £100. For example, if you win £100 with your first bet, they will double it up and give you another £100 completely free. And you can withdraw it immediately as well

And we can make this bet totally risk free by laying it off at Totalbet and Paddy Power.

We're going to lay out a total of £180.00 on the match and we will win either £58, £12 or break even on the match but we'll gain a total of £20.00 in free bets, with more to come later and we can cash these out on the next round of matches.

If you already have accounts with one or more of the bookies I have chosen, you won't be able to do this but if that is the case, just let me know and I'll find you an alternative bookie of which there are a few.

Here's how it's done. Just follow these simple instructions.

1. Open accounts with Betfred, Totalbet and Paddy Power. This shouldn't take you any longer than ten minutes.

2. Make the following deposits into your new accounts. Deposit £70 into your new Betfred account. Deposit £60 into your new Paddy Power account and deposit £50 into your new Totalbet account.

3. Now make the following bets.

Place £70 on Middlesbrough to win at 6/5 with Betfred.

Place £50 on Portsmouth to win at 13/5 with Totalbet .

Place £60 on the draw at 11/5 with Paddy Power.

You have temporarily laid out a total of £180. I stress, temporarily... Now sit back, crack a beer open, crank up Sky TV and enjoy the match.

4. Here's what happens at the end of the game.

If Middlesbrough win, you will collect £238.00 from Betfred, including your bonus and your stake back.

If Portsmouth win, you will collect £180.00 from Totalbet , including your stake back.

If it's a draw, you will collect £192.00 from Paddy Power, including your stake back.

5. You will also be credited with a free £10 bet from Totalbet and a free £10 bet from Paddy Power and if you decide to keep on betting with Totalbet , you will also receive further free bets up to the value of £15.

We can cash out the free bets on the next round of Premiership matches by selecting a match with suitable odds and backing all three possible outcomes with the same companies using only the free bets in your accounts.

This means that the worst case scenario on the Middlesbrough v Portsmouth match is two free £10 bets if Portsmouth win. If however, you would like the bet reworking so that the worst case scenario is hinging on a draw or a Middlesbrough win, just contact me and I'll rework it.

Also, if you want me to work out the best way to cash out the free bets on the next matches, just contact me and I'll do all the maths for you and tell you the best bets to place.

This method was used very successfully during the World Cup and you can read all about how it was done right here.

It's understandable that some people will not believe that it is possible to do this. "What's the catch?" I hear you asking. My answer to that question is that we have been publishing arbitrage bets for three seasons now and literally hundreds of people have profited from following the advice on these pages.

Just enjoy the profit and stay posted for many more of these throughout the season.
