Rovers Sign Wrexham Forward Connor Jennings

By Deadly Submarine
June 2 2016

Tranmere have today made another huge signing as they confirmed a two-year deal for Wrexham Captain Connor Jennings…

Two days ago it was Steven Jennings signing up with Rovers for the 2016/17 National League campaign but today he was joined by a namesake as Connor Jennings put pen to paper on a two-year deal with the Club.

The forward player, who is 24 years old, had been with local rivals Wrexham for the past two seasons and last season was both their Captain and leading goalscorer having netted 14 games for the Welsh side during the campaign.

As the closed-season got underway, Jennings was out of contract with Wrexham and despite being offered a new deal at The Racecourse where he picked up their Player of the Season Award as well as National League Player of the Month last February, he has instead opted to join Rovers.

After joining Scunthorpe United as a Youth player in January 2012, Jennings went on three separate loan stints away from Glanford Park, taking in Stockport, Macclesfield and Grimsby.

During these three loan spells combined, Jennings made 38 appearances and scored 21 times including an impressive 16 goals in 16 appearances for Macclesfield.

After a Scunthorpe career that yielded just three starts and one goal for his parent club, Jennings moved to North Wales in July 2014 to play for Wrexham where he scored 22 goals in 82 appearances including his 14 last season, many of which came whilst playing a midfield role.

Speaking of the new signing, Rovers Manager Gary Brabin said:

"I am delighted to be able to bring Connor Jennings to the Club. He will offer us something different to the forward options we already have at our disposal."

“Connor is technically very good, he’s quick and he has plenty of experience and a good record at this level. At 24, he is coming into his peak years and I believe he will be a real asset to the Club.”

Tranmere have just signed the striker who was at Wrexham last season on a two-year deal.

Their fans were a bit mixed on him towards the end of last season but looks a decent signing on paper anyway!

The Wrexham fan I work with is well and truly pee'd off (Sm6)(Sm6)

From what I've heard they're gutted about losing him. Great signing in my eyes!

No to get a couple of full backs in

Great signing this. Wrexhams top scorer last season with 14 and I'm hoping we will continue to play him in midfield and actual have a goal threat and creativity coming from there.

Great news, we have signed Wrexham's player of the season from their squad. They have only offered seven existing players contracts, our Connor was one of them.

And they stole Riley off us, the scoundrels!

Brabin happy, Mills sad, Id say!

Can anyone tell me if he was the quick one, who McNulty was struggling with, when we played them only a few weeks ago? If so good signing.

I would like to see us re-sign Hughes and Vaughan, keep Sutton and Mekki, find a couple of full backs and another midfielder and we wont be too far away.

The last ten days have been very good.

Another positive signing, this might suggest Jennings and Cook up front with Norwood on the wing

Jennings can also play attacking central midfield I think so there's also the possibility of Cook and Norwood up top and Jennings behind.

It will be interesting to see!

I make that 59 goals last season between those three!!!

I feel it'll be Cook & Nors up top with Jennings behind them.

Just to play devil's advocate Sub, you could argue that Cook & Jennings had players feeding them better.... (Sm159)

I can certainly see some form of diamond shape formation or even a sole striker with Jennings (C) and Norwood behind with this news. Also makes the signing of the other Jennings more understandable I think, as this would suits a three-man central midfield, which might help all involved. It might make the winger some have been clamouring for redundant though, or at the very most a off the bench option, which Kirby can probably do.

Cheap shot that deadly. Tut, tut.

I was critical originally but now starting to feel more confident.

I wouldn't favour a diamond formation though because of the tendency for that to lack width. Connor Jennings adds great competition for places which should help us play better.

4-4-2 or 4-3-3 for me!

Good business and the right age in terms of putting together a squad that could look at a double promotion before any possible restructure.
Hopefully we have two full backs of similar quality already lined up.

I would be very surprised if Mekki has a better offer but he is relatively easy to replace.

I notice Zoom is stalling on Crewe's offer could it possibly be a return?

Good signing, does this mean the club have had an answer or indication from Mekki he's off as they seem quite similar players, hope not. Cook Jennings up top, Norwood in behind, Mekki Maynard Harris behind. I think these are defiantly better signings than last year

As regards the signings the last 2 seasons we have struggled to score goals so cook and Conor Jennings are to me a good step towards addressing the problem

An attack minded left back should be our next priority

I thought you'd had an epiphany and binned him for good.

As for Jennings, I'm not convinced about the comment on him playing for any league 1 and 2 club, or he'd have gone to a bigger club and when he was at Scunthorpe his record wasn't stellar, but to be able to bag a decent sides top man from what I am inferring is heartening indeed and it shows ambition, that top 10 clubs are being targeted for their 2-3 candidates for player of the season, so a good signing all things considered.

Then I ate his Liver.......... with some baked beans and a can of coke.

It's just going to be the same as last season, signing good players & having the best squad in the league, but with a clueless manager you've got no chance. Same sort of scenario with England, players aren't too bad but Hodgson is completely clueless.

Roy Hodgson is a terrible manager TranmereFan. Back to Tranmere, I really hope Brabin proves me wrong this season but I just can't see it. We're going to have a really strong squad again this season, so I'll give him the first ten games to prove he's turned it around, if not he needs to go. We can't afford to be in this league for a third season.

I think Jennings will work best at the head of a diamond midfield, just behind Cook and Norwood. Bringing in a couple of wingers would help the supply. Perhaps if we gave Dale Jennings a chance to rebuild his career, and signed Ryan Jennings who was on loan at Grimsby from Wigan last season, we could go for a midfield of Jennings, Jennings, Jennings and Jennings.

Whilst I think Dale Jennings is too much of a risk to sign, I now think we should for comedic effect.

Good signing, the forward line looks strong, we now have 3 proven goal scorers at this level who all contributed 20+ goals last season, unlike this time last year when we were getting carried away with Cole, Margetts even though they hadn't played in this league.

Not a fan of this diamond formation people are talking about, you need very creative attacking midfielders and good pacey attacking fullbacks for this to work.

I think 442 or 443, although we do need pace out wide, fullbacks and at at least 2 wingers have to be the priority now, the spine looks strong now.

For me pacey players out wide is the key, especially playing at home, we need something to excite the crowd an enjoy watching us, that's why the diamond wouldn't work, we were to narrow last season and after half an hour of trying to break teams down the crowd would just be on the lads backs, even in this big bruiser league, pace is key in modern football!

We may still have Sutton and that would provide both cover and sufficient quality to provide competition. The quality iof signings thus far makes me hopeful that we will also secure quality full backs.

I have real doubts about Brabin but it does seem unreasonable that every action is used by some to add criticism. Last years squad was not as strong as some claim ,in part because of players inherited. It is the first time in his career that he has had the time to really shape a squad. There is a real chance that he will grow with experience and having choosen the most of the squad he may be more confident in the tactics deployed.

At the very least he should be given credit for what on paper look like two excellent signings. The loanees (as is always the case with such players) were a mixed bag last season but he has made few mistkes in terms of long term signings.

Experience matters and there is a real prospect that he will develop as a manager. In the interim,he should at least be given credit for good recruitment
I like the fact that we are signing players that are experienced but young enough to give s number of years service and may even get better. That alone suggests that he can be more strategic than some suggest
