The first new squad addition of the summer was confirmed last night as Rovers signed Barrow striker Andy Cook…….
Tranmere yesterday announced their first signing of the summer as they confirmed that Barrow striker Andy Cook has put pen to paper on a two-year contract. The announcement was made exclusively by Rovers Chairman Mark Palios last night at the Official Supporters Club Meeting and Q&A held at the Club.
Cook, who is 25, scored 24 goals for the Cumbrian side in 2015/16 and looks set to be a great addition to the squad alongside Tranmere’s very own 20+ goals striker James Norwood next season.
Cook’s 24 goals was the third best tally in the National League last season and subject to a medical, Rovers will have beaten reported interest from a number of Football League Clubs to acquire his signature.
Aside from a two season spell at Grimsby Town, Cook has played all of his career in Cumbria having begun as a trainee at Carlisle United where he failed to make any first team appearances before signing for Barrow in January 2011 after two previous loan spells with them (October 2009 to December 2009 and August 2010 to January 2011).
In his first spell at Barrow he scored 18 goals in 39 starts whilst making a further 22 substitute appearances and after 18 months he signed in the summer of 2012 for Grimsby Town where he scored 14 goals in 46 appearance over two seasons. His time at Grimsby included scoring in the FA Trophy Final at Wembley for the Mariners in 2013 and helping them to the play-offs in both seasons he was at the club.
In July 2014 he returned to Barrow where he was part of the Bluebirds side that gained promotion from the Conference North in his first season back at Holker Street whilst he was also a popular figure amongst the Barrow supporters and picked up a number of Player of the Season awards.
Speaking of the new signing, manager Gary Brabin said:
"I am delighted to be able to bring Andy Cook to the Club. He is a hard-working player who has consistently been scoring 20+ goals per season, which made him one of my top priority targets.” “We know that we need to improve our performance in front of goal, and I am sure that Andy will play a big role in helping us to achieve that."

We've signed Andy Cook from Barrow - confirmed tonight as an exclusive by Palios at the meeting!
A fantastic signing in my opinion. 27 goals last season for Barrow. 2 year deal from what I hear. A good piece of business for the club. He's 25, an eye for goal and i'm sure he'll get plenty when Brabin plays him on the wing. Cynicism aside, let's hope he's the first of many!!
Be interesting to see how Norwood and Cook play together. Be good to have a Clayton/Clarke type partnership. I wish.
This is amazing news. He had told Barrow that he would only leave for a league club and Carlisle looked like a nailed on move.If this is confirmed then it shows the wisdom of doing business without shouting it from the rooftops. A massive signing. If we had him last season we would certainly have made the play offs

Excellent news at last[as long as we play 2 up front]. The Barrow fans,who assumed he was going to Carlisle,are distinctly unimpressed.

Clearly the lull has been down to sitting it out for the right players to make their mind up. There isn't a club in the NL who wouldn't have taken him.

Brabin has signed him yes, however, it's how we line up that counts.
Don't forget, Brabin signed Mangan and look how that turned out?
The proof of the pudding will be how he sets the team up and how they play.
Credit to him for signing quality, but please stop the one dimensional tactics next season and play to the players strengths.

Depends which andy cook we get, awesome at barrow awful at grimsby. Lets hope its the former . Based on last season its a top signing
14 goals in 73 games apparently, which is approximately 1 every 5.2 matches.
However a decent assist total could make that look credible, but I don't assist figures to hand.

I'd love to see a set of wingers join! My last game last season before I emigrated was away at Torquay! Their wingers weren't great but they got down the flanks and kept floating ball after ball in! I wonder if we had some good wingers feeding Norwood and Cook whether we would get more goals! I hope after this signing we don't get carried away and think we'll walk it like we did last season.

with cooks signing, plus the fact he could have easily found a league club for the new season, it goes to show we have the pulling power and the potential.

They're very upset about it at the Barrow fans forum. Thus he must be a decent player. By contrast I remember when we paid money for George Donnelly from Rochdale and they were actually happy to see him go. Donnelly is still unemployed, apparently.

Cook had one good season at Grimsby followed by one indifferent season.That is not uncommon with young strikers but his stats from 21 on make him worthy of the term striker.As for attitude Cox obviously thinks highly of him and a year ago Cox would have been my first pick as manager at Rovers

Am i missing something? It reads 44 starts plus 29 sub apperances which equals 73 with 14 goals, am i reading it wrong ml? Ive been known to be dopey at the best of times
Very good signing with a few more should have a good side ,but thought that last year with Mangan and Norwood .it will all depend on how Brabin sets up the side will probably play cook at left back and Norwood in goal
Welcome Andy, looks a better signing than mangan to me, onwards and upwards.
According to Brabin he has consistently been scoring 20+ goals per season. I think I'm right in saying he's only scored 20+ once.

Maybe I misread. I assumed 29 of 44 were him coming on as substitute because I couldn't see how they could have played so many games.
I never really look at games as a sub as if they come on for 2 minutes to waste a bit of time it distorts the stats. So good return in 44 starts
Good points moanerlesser and andymase.... When arsenal won the league wenger put martin keown on for the last 5 mins of each of the last 4 games to get him up to the requisit 10 appearences tomqualify for a medal, although there is a really funny story ray parlour tells about this
Just seen the video on the club site of Cook scoring against us last season, dare I say this but he looks to be another large character either that or he was smuggling a beachball.

Its last game of the invincibles season and keown has only played 9 games requiring 10 to secure a championship medal, arsenal have already made 2 of their 3 substitutions and keown ( a notorious hothead) is getting more and more riled and animated on the bench as the clock ticks down with arsenal about four nil up.
Eventually parlour suggests that keown goes and warms up in front of wenger to remind him... Wenger promptly tells him to move as he couldnt see the match, parlour then recommends keown warms up in front of the north bank who will undoubtedly sing his name and jolt wengers memory and pop him onto the park.
This of course happened and whilst keown was milking the applause snd wenger was engrossed in the match he would wind up keown who was 50 yards away by stripping his tracky off and making as though wenger was sending him on. As you can imagine when keown spotted this he lost it completely he sprinted 50 yards up the touchline and grabbed the totally unsuspecting wenger in a headlock screaming ' what about my f***ing medal, ' poor old arsene was non the wiser as to what was going on whilst parlour, gary lewin and dennis bergkamp fell about laughing on the bench.
I promise its a lot funnier when parlour tells it

Can he though, the consistent 20+ isn't that looking at stats, see how he goes if he gets a run out.
Scoring many for Barrow is one thing and it shows potential, but he has not played for Tranmere yet and although I am enthusiastic about this signing, just as some are quick to write people off after playing 0-90 minutes of football, so it is peverse to act like he will be a smash hit after 0-90 minutes of football.
He has had no chance to prove himself a talisman at this stage, just like past players who proved inadequate couldn't after just being signed.
I'm hoping he comes good however and hopefully he will transition well.
