Match Discussion: Chester (A)

By Deadly Submarine
February 26 2016

A place for fans of both Tranmere Rovers and Chester to discuss Sunday lunchtime's upcoming match at the Looker Vauxhall Stadium......

As Rovers prepare for Sunday's local derby game away at Chester, our match discussion thread returns once again as Rovers look to bounce back from last weekend's unlucky 1-0 home defeat to National League leaders Cheltenham Town at Prenton Park whilst Chester will be looking to gain revenge for Rovers' 2-0 home win over them back in early September.

Whether you are unable to make the game for any reason, or even if you are attending, this is the place to discuss all the pre-match build up including team line-up and score predictions, events during the match itself  as well as all the post match fall-out and analysis.   The thread is open to fans of both sides to discuss the events surrounding the game so if you haven't got a Message Forum accounts yet then why not sign up now?

Tranmere will travel to Chester FC at Lunchtime on Sunday

3-1 Chester, local Derby at their ground, they'll be up and at it. We'll have Higdon in the middle, GTF on the wing and Jennings in the centre, gonna get thumped.

Great result in a derby match, but again a shortfall of goals from open play is a bit of a worry. Just why do have we GFT and Higdon signed on it's about time they earned their wages with an odd goal now and again ,god they are strikers or at least it's what we've been told?

Superb result against a very poor Chester team, brilliant performances by Jenno & McNulty with my MOM going to Mekki, always a threat and won us the penalty, however when we were in total control only a 1-0 win is worrying and you have to say shame on the Chester fans with such a poor attendance, enjoy the weekend.

Best performance of the season today from Rovers. Every player looked like they wanted to win it and Chester were damn fortunate it wasn't five or six in the end.

I said in the week I didn't want to be critical of Higdon too soon and today I thought he did really well winning the ball and laying it off a number of times - yet still got abuse from the idiots by me and was cheered off as well when his number came up on the board.

As I've said on the Man of the Match thread there were lots of contenders with my top three being McNulty, Hughes and Mekki but went for Hughes who was brilliant in the middle of midfield!

Deadly - funny how we all see the game differently. That game had 0-0 written all over it for me. Neither side looked like they had a goal in them. Penalty was a disgrace I thought, blatant dive for me but should have had one for handball so evened out.
We are inept in front of goal, we need a striker desperately, our TOP scorer is someone I consider a decent goal scoring midfielder but not a forward, how many goals have we scored from penalties? We don't look capable of scoring from open play, one good attempt with great save from there keeper.
I was very disappointed with performance today, but we won which is main thing
Don't know where 5 or 6 came from I can't even remember 6 shots on target?

Adjusted Table after this week's matches:

Team-----------Points Per Game----Projection
1. Cheltenham-----2.26---------------103.83
2. Forest Green----2.17---------------99.67
3. Grimsby----------1.88---------------86.42
4. Braintree---------1.69---------------77.63
5. Dover-------------1.68---------------77.16
6. **Tranmere**---1.63---------------74.91
7. Gateshead------1.62---------------74.41
8. Eastleigh--------1.56---------------71.88
9. Wrexham--------1.56---------------71.56
10. Lincoln City----1.49---------------68.34

An interesting note...we went the entire month of February without a non-penalty goal. At this point we only care about winning, regardless of how we do it but that is an alarming stat. Great result today!

We could have been 3-0 up inside ten minutes. Apart from five minutes towards the end of the first half, Chester never had a sniff it was all Rovers. Chester were sloppy, playing hoofball and looked generally out of the game for most of it.

I agree with the part about Chester,no just never thought we would score either. Said to my mate after 30 mins this has 0-0 written all over it, thankfully I was wrong.
We are doing ok but still no cutting edge in my opinion, I feel we are only 1 or 2 players away from being a decent side at this level.

Next game us a big one

Andy is making a fair point Deadly. We can't keep saying 'should have won by more' when we get narrow victories.

We are all made up with the win and just want to see games where the opposition can't get back into it. Particularly when they are rubbish like Chester were.

You're right it is three points same as any win,but what's at fault is that it's another penalty we can't expect any official to give us a penalty every time we want to win a game. It's goals from open play we need now starting this Saturday not the one after or the week after but NOW.

Why is it ''at fault''? A penalty, set piece, own goal as well as open play. They all count as the same..

Overall, a very good team performance. Hughes is a bit of an unsung hero in center mid & I think Maynard may well have a bit of a struggle to get back in the side when he's recovered! After yesterday (once Harris' ban is up) I'd like to see a central 3 of Jenno, Harris & Hughes with Hughes being given the freedom to roam. Drop Higdon for GTF and I think that's quite an imposing group coming forward at you with Mekki & Kirby/Mackreth on the wings.

It wasn't the greatest game in the world but I'm happy with the win. Hughes had his best game in a rovers shirt yesterday, while jennings did all the hard graft, he was left to pick out good passes and got stuck in when he needed. Mcnulty and Ikewhe won everything in the air and dealt with Chesters limited attack.

Please please Gary, bench higdon. He was absolutely awful again and if I was Stockton I'd be very disappointed he was ahead of me in the pecking order. He was bought to score goals but can't even pass properly or run. A complete waste of a wage.

I remember one point early in the second half, the attack had already broken down and the ball had gone out for a throw in, he was still laboring up into the box and ended up bent over with his hands on his knees....why is he being picked to play when he's clearly not up to it??

Margetts to start up top with Norwood from here on for me. Although I've campaigned for GTF to be the player to sit behind Norwood and play him in, I'm starting to feel this "big target man" Brabin has said that we apparently needed, just doesn't seem to be working.

Yes, we got the win, and that's all that matters to me, but going forwards that is the main change I'd like to see.

Thought we were completely dominant from start to finish. The only worry was getting complacent and allowing them back in. We might have stumbled upon a good centre mid pairing as Hughes and Jenno were excellent, Hughes much better than Maynard on that showing.

Completely agree with Sub that it could have been more, disagree on Higdon though. He doesn't jump, and I think his demeanor doesn't help him. Offers nothing in my opinion and I would like to see him benched. I honestly think Cole could offer as much as him.

Apart from that, faultless. McNulty was fantastic, and we looked a solid unit.

Which only goes to show why we are struggling to score goals. This inability has bedevilled our season and must be a contributory factor in our poor home record.
We can make the play offs but it would be easier to be confident if we could be more dominant. As it is any away team scoring one goal has a very good chance of taking points from us.
We should take three points off Gateshead and their defence is vulnerable but Can we really feel confident that scoring once a game is a recipe for promotion?

A half decent result and a win is a win. I still think without the penalty there was enough time to have scored, so I'm not overly concerned by the timing of penalties too much, although having an extra goal here and there in open play would be good.

Kithson Bain, a player you sign and then loan to a club 2 divisions down. Nothing to cause a stink about if it's an 18 year old first year pro, looking for experience, but a new signing treated like a FYP, looks like a totally bum signing.

One reason? He played in the same international side as Jason Roberts.

Makes me wonder then why every Liberian international, wasn't getting £25,000 a week in the big leagues 15 years ago, just because they played their matches with world footballer of the year winner George Weah.

Baffling Barnes logic.

Then again Panama used to have the Dely Valdes brothers playing in the La Liga, so maybe Fergie should have started stocking his squad with 3-4 Panamanians on handsome wages and won the title with players who never played in a world cup.

That would have cost him his name on a stand immediately, when the team never got into Europe, as the fans would never have forgiven him for Panama gate (Sm6).

Then I ate his Liver.......... with some baked beans and a can of coke.
