Three Straight Defeats for Rovers After Wycombe Loss

Tranmere fall to a third successive League defeat and edge closer to the Football League trapdoor after a 2-1 home to defeat to Wycombe on Tuesday night......

After two away defeats, many fans came to tonight’s game looking for the type of performance the team showed against Shrewsbury in the last home game. This was a must win game with another home game coming very quickly before a run of tough away games.
News came through an hour before kick off that we had signed attacking midfielder Dan Gardner on loan for a month from Chesterfield. Many wondered about the line up and the formation and in the end Micky Adams decided to make two changes to the team that started at Cheltenham with Myrie-Williams and Donnelly missing out and McGahey coming in to a back three and Marc Laird returning to the midfield alongside Steven Jennings and Max Power.
The game was poor to start off with neither side creating anything. Tranmere’s 3-5-2 formation was equalled by Wycombe’s 4-4-2 and the first 20 minutes were pretty dull. The game sprung to life in the 26th minute with the referee giving a debatable penalty for handball against McGahey which Hayes converted for Wycombe to give them the lead.
The goal brought Tranmere to life and in the next five minutes Laird had a couple of half chances before a ball into the box from Power fell to the feet of Hughill who diverted the ball into the net for a Tranmere.

Tranmere maintained the momentum with Power making a darting run through midfield before hitting his long range effort wide. It was then, after a long ball found the Tranmere back line to far up, that Onyedinma was able to race clear and slot the ball through the legs of Fon Williams and into the Tranmere net.
Down at half time, Tranmere started brightly and looked the more likely to score but after an hour Hugill and McGahey where substituted and replaced by Dan Gardner, making his debut and Iain Hume. It has to be said the substitutions did not seem to help Tranmere’s still seemed to be comfortable.
For the last twenty minutes Wycombe played “professionally” forcing countless stop starts for throw ins, niggle fouls and wasting of time. In the 89th minute a header by Ihiekwe was cleared off the line but that was as close as Tranmere came in the closing stages.
Overall a good team performance by Wycombe sees them take the points, whilst for Tranmere a fall of two League places they are now only +9 goals away from a relegation place. I couldn’t name a Man of the Match as there was no stand out performance it can only be hoped that something changes before the now crucial game against Dagenham on Saturday.

Substitutes Not Used: Ramsbottom, Ridehalgh, Thompson, Koumas.
Wycombe: Ingram, Jombati, Jacobson, Hayes, Rowe, Mawson, Bloomfield (Murphy 89), Wood, Onyedinma (Craig 89), Yennaris, Saunders (McClure 67 - sent off 68).
Substitutes Not Used: Richardson, Ephraim, Holloway, Fletcher.
