Tranmere Rovers v Walsall Match Discussion

By Deadly Submarine
January 10 2014

If you can't make Tranmere's game at home to Walsall on Saturday, why not join in the banter right here with other Rovers fans who are unable to attend...

Following football even at League One level is pretty expensive these days and no matter how much you love the Rovers, it will sometimes be difficult to make the games in person whether it be the lengthy away trips, or for exiles living elsewhere in the UK or abroad, the home games too.

As a result, for those fans who can't make some of the Rovers games this season, we at Total Tranmere will be providing this match discussion thread for you to discuss developments with the game.

 Stadium - Tranmere Rovers (Day)

Tranmere of course, host Walsall on Saturday, so if you're not going to the game why not join in the banter right here while the game is going on?  You could also use this thread to discuss other interesting scores throughout the league as well as discussing this game afterwards if you have been to watch the game live.

What you discuss below is up to you but hopefully it can all be focused on one thread to make it easier for everyone to use.

Be good to see:

OFW
Pennington Taylor Arthurworrey Ridehalgh
Kennedy Jenno Koumas Robbo
Stockton Lowe

From the wolves game, lowe needs help up there to make best use of his work rate and ability. Wallace suspended can be the opportunity to remedy it.

If the new lad from everton doesnt start, i would be more than happy for kirby to play. Works very hard with right back to stop crosses and with 90 minutes i think would do well.

1st half terrible. 2nd half improved for about 25 mins, went 1-1 and then didnt seem to want to win it enough. Frustrating as we will go down if this lack of desire continues

Lets face it , we are a team of OAPs and young loanees. Totally crap. Doubt if anyone would want to buy this shite!

1st half horrific made les parry look like Pellegrini....almost. Using the right back as a target man as OFW hoofed it out to the right wing.....great football....

2nd half bit better as they sat off, although didn't threaten and goal came out the blue from a great turn and shot from cole. The lad who ronnie tried to ship out on loan a few weeks back!

Koumas has been poor in the game's i've seen doesn't hold it doesn't create/doesn't score/out of position.....

Thought the defence + jennings in front looked solid.

In front of that very poor.

The formation not the problem for me just the way we play it. We need pace out wide and the manager has to let both wide men and a midfielder get up in support. Also with the extra man in midfield passing it through the middle instead of hoofing long to give possession away might be a plan!

A decent point against a good team. Would hope moving forward we see this

Kirby/Akpro Robbo/Koumas Kennedy behind lowe. Robbo can create down the middle but doesn't have the speed for out wide in this system imo.

A good group of players being held back by poor tactics and instruction imo.

The first hour was like a training session with their goal coming out of the blue in the middle of it. Our worst two players were correctly substituted after about an hour. Both failed to distinguish themselves with their reactions to this decision.

After Kirby and Stockton came on,we improved but it was difficult not to. Our equaliser also came out of the blue. Both goals could possibly have been saved by the respective keepers.
Their scorer Lalkovic should have been sent off on two occasions for headbutts[not hard ones but they were headbutts]. He was substituted probably for his own good before his aggressiveness got him a red card.

Neither side deserved to win so a draw was a fair result.
Our defence was ok.particularly Arthurworrey[who does things the simple way]. Jennings and Rowe did well by and large but were let down in the first hour by their two experienced colleagues.
Kennedy did well in spells and is fast and tricky and crossed a few good balls. Lowe as usual got absolutely no support.

Still we back away from the opposition inviting them to shoot! At least we had a bit of a go in the 2nd half. Biggest surprise for me was we actually scored. Lowe ran his socks off with no support. For a 35 yr old he puts the rest to shame.

Koumas and Robinson are part of the problem rather than the solution. Both lack pace and impact. Each could have a use off the bench but not starting games. It is really clear that the squad is not good enough and hence the constant struggle to win at home against anyone. I really do not understand RMs attitude towards Stockton. Her has. A raw potential that will only improve with games instead he plays dross that will always be dross.i fear that we are mismanaging a potential asset. It is all the stranger when there is so little potential in this squad

not sure we can play Koumas and Robbo together they are both 35 later this year one of them maybe with a young player alongside
I would keep Koumas in the team on balance
Ryan Lowe is exceptional for his age but needs support
I would give Cole another chance alongside Ryan
thought Steve Jennings did quite well today
James Rowe worked very hard

Koumas has at times been our biggest performer recently but Robbo offers nothing and should not have been kept over McGurk in the summer.

Robbo can be excellent but for me has to be as a sub player in last 20 mins of a game.he is getting tired quicker in games and his attitude can be bit off, like today after being subbed. Start kirby from the start of games.

Robbo offers nothing? I must poilitely disagree. He scored 10 goals last season and he scored the winner against Stevenage recently and he also scored 2 goals in the first 4 games of the season, but unfortunately in the first Walsall game his goal counted for nothing.

He is still a big impact player and I still think he's worth starting, for the added confidence he may give the team.

A fair result today, but it would have been potentially enhanced by Wallace playing. That recent sending off could have hampered the ability to win this game and potentially the next 2 as well.

I'm also not in complete agreement about the team being full of OAP's and young loanees thing, as players like Fon Williams, Ridehalgh, Taylor, Holmes, Jennings and Horwood, don't fit the profile, but there are a reasonable amount of such players in the squad I agree, but sometimes it has to be the way, because Tranmere can't afford £2,500+ a week, mid / late 20's, free transfers.

The only good thing about signing under 25's in Ronnie's tenure, is that since the Parry days, a lot of the younger signings are better quality than the likes of Wood, Darville and Cathalina, which to me shows there's been a bit of a step up in procurement, albeit there needs to be more done to get results out of the team as a whole, both from the management's perspective and from the players perspective as well, as they're all in it together.

That recent run of 15 points from 9 games was sustainable I feel, but since the cup defeat and the speculation about a couple of players, all in the space of 7-8 days, form has been patchy and all concerned must work together to change things and I do wonder if those two incidences, have been affecting the teams togetherness in some way.

Then I ate his Liver.......... with some baked beans and a can of coke.

Last season he offered something but this is here and now and he offers very little apart from a bad attitude towards the rest of the squad it seems as well as his appalling attitude to the fans specially today.

Also I think you mean he scored against Shrewsbury?

Genuine question.... what did Robbo offer today?

Koumas was straight down the tunnel today when he was subbed without acknowledging the bench. I agree with you about McGurk and Robbo.

Mcgurk we shouldn't have let go that's a given.

Koumas for me offers little at present doesn't look like contributing anything attacking or defensively.

Robbo can be useful in the hole but think this season will be his last.

Think lot of Robbo's action bourn from frustration at how the team is set up and our performances, todays action are not good and not defending them but they come from passion about the club and his game, used well he is still the most creative player we have.

For the first half, we were set up far too defensively. Not for the first time, Lowe was too isolated. Jennings ( who for me played well) was sat just in front of the back 4 too, meaning we were playing more of a 5-4-1

Too slow to counter, not enough pushing forward and getting in the box. A familiar story I'm afraid

Much better after subs, and correct changes too IMO. A tad lucky with the goal as their keeper should have done better, but just about did enough to deserve a point

Robinson sat on the bench we he was taken off only Koumas went straight down the tunnel.

The first hour we were awful they were much the better side passed the ball around really well and created some good chances whilst we created little or nothing.

The final half hour was much better once the changes had been made, Kennedy looked lively can hopefully will do well for us. A point we barely deserved on the whole but one which was badly needed.

Kirby has to come in now for Robinson as he is playing very poorly and isn't contributing much at all, think hes finished now.

How can robbo be blamed here, when ronnie plays 4-5-1, keeping everyone behind the ball. Robbo and koumas are creative players, who are basically being asked to defend for 70 mins, and every time they go forward there is no-one for them to create things for.

Blame koumas and robbo when they play poorly in a 4-4-2.

In which they will thrive with jenno who will do there work.

doesn't matter the system if neither player passes the ball to a team mate the system is not too blame, they were both very poor

Hi lads,

Just wanted to say what a fantastic experience me and my 7 year old had visiting Tranmere as Walsall fans. We've been to a load of away games and we enjoyed this one more than any other. Such friendly people, from the stewards to the home fans to the bar staff that we encountered. Many times travelling away, we have been greeted with unhelpful, hostile divs, that saw me and my little lad as some sort of threatening aliens. It made a really nice change to have such a nice, friendly welcome. It really has an impact on a young lad's impression of football and I'm really grateful for that.

Best of luck for the rest of the season.

Take care,

Chris.

You must have better stewards in the away end than the home end though!
