Crawley Town (H) Match Discussion Thread

By Deadly Submarine
August 10 2013

If you can't make Tranmere's opening home League game of the season against Crawley Town in Sky Bet League One on Saturday afternoon, why not join in the banter right here with other Rovers fans who are unable to attend...

Following football even at League One level is pretty expensive these days and no matter how much you love the Rovers, it will sometimes be difficult to make the games in person whether it be the lengthy away trips, or for exiles living elsewhere in the UK or abroad, the home games too.

As a result, for those fans who can't make some of the Rovers games this season, we at Total Tranmere will be providing this match discussion thread for you to discuss developments with the game.

Stadium - Tranmere Rovers (Day)

Tranmere of course, host Crawley Town in the first home League game of the season later today in Sky Bet League One so if you're not going to the game why not join in the banter right here while the game is going on?  You could also use this thread to discuss other interesting scores throughout the league as well as discussing this game afterwards if you have been to watch the game live.

What you discuss below is up to you but hopefully it can all be focused on one thread to make it easier for everyone to use.

bigmart it nearly was 2-1, then the defence falls asleep again, very lucky to get a draw, sodje does nothing in the game at all for me, foster and horwood cannot defend at all, gibson is better than foster any day of the week, a set piece again they score, second half we just could not cope down the right hand side of their attack, robbo at thommo best players on the pitch, made up lowe scored too, id start with jlaa and lowe next game.

My observations from todays game.

Our defense is truly shocking, we cannot keep defending this way if we want to progress this season. Horwood and Holmes are both culpable down each side with Horwood being the worst of the two. Don't know what's happened to Danny but he used to be clever, he would never get caught out as he'd always be ahead due to his lack of pace but that seems to have gone. Horwood is only interested in going forward and just leaves so much room behind him, its criminal and unless its fixed it's going to cost us all season long. Ash and Foster just don't seem to work well together and neither can pass a ball to save there life which is an issue. They may get better but how long do we have to wait before we change it.

Midfield looked alright for most of the game. Atkinson and Max played well although there wasn't a lot of support for the defense which left us vulnerable. Thompson and Robbo looked good today. Joe took both his goals extremely well and looked better. Robbo had a very good game, constant threat going forward and looked good. Koumas looked good too when he came on and the pass to Akpro was sublime, only wish he's have finished it as it would have been a tremendous goal.

Lowe is different class but he just needs service. His hold play is fantastic and created Thompsons first and nearly created a few more too. Sodje is just not good enough for me, he hardly won a header all game and is so slow compared to the others. Akpro did what he always does, gets up defenders noses and is a pain in the backside. He has to start for me next game and I think he will create chances for Lowe also.

All in all, a massive amount of work to do and changes to be made as not even the genius of James Wallace can can save us if we keep defending that badly.

Agree with pretty much all of the above, first time seeing new signings today. Actually quite enjoyed it in the end, although very frustrating at times.

The defending was abysmal, with Ash and Foster shocking in possession and trying to overplay...clearly out of comfort zone playing this way. In Foster's defence I do think he could make up into a decent defender if sticking to strengths, he won most things in the air and made some vital blocks. Horwood's defending was poor and he looks slow, but to give him some credit, he put some superb crosses in, every one was delivered into the killer area..very impressed with that, but would prefer someone who can defend.

Thought Max was poor, Atkinson worked hard is neat and tidy, but no world beater, whilst Robbo was superb, kept plugging away and Thompson took his goals well.

Sodje????? Oh dear, no link up with the intelligent Lowe, didn't move towards ball and didn't win much in the air. JLAA must start the next game!! Felt sorry for Lowe really, great finish at the end.

Also looking fwd to when Koumas is up to a full 90, jase and Wallace would make for some midfield. Still got the class.. ball for JLAA was absolute class!

Generally seems to be a lack of confidence throughout the side, not worried at this stage as think they'll sort the defending out, but what we'd give to have Wallace back.

Good going forwards, suspicious at the back and if I was their manager, I'd be tempted to play their defender who scored 2 in attack in future.

The thin defensive resources are already being tested, but reinforcements may need procuring soon if things keep up, because there cannot be the same quality of concessions going on for much longer, because frequently good defensive displays for the last 2 years are now being undermined so early on.

Then I ate his Liver.......... with some baked beans and a can of coke.

Three all was about right for a game with 2 shocking defences.

I felt sorry for Horwood because he had no cover from Robinson who tried to be all over the place but was frankly abysmal. Also Foster's ineptitude caused Horwood and the team problems throughout the game and our left side was therefore wide open.

Sodje was at fault for the first goal by virtually allowing their centre back a free header-for Walsh's second goal [their third]he was almost allowed the freedom of Prenton Park to turn[in his own time] steady himself and slot it into the corner. No defender moved towards him.

For the second goal, Power was at fault in allowing the player to get past him on the byline to cross the ball for a tap in. However,in mitigation for Max, he was on a booking[for pulling their player back in a dangerous position after another Foster error in the first half].

The passing sideways across the area is fine if players ahead move so that the forward ball can be made. When nobody moves, eventually one of the defenders[usually Ash or Danny] has to go long and invariably we lose the ball . Today Crawley basically just waited for the passing to break down and reclaimed the ball.

The service to Lowe has been basically non existent. He showed with his goal what can happen if he's given a decent chance. JLAA was better than Sodje-Koumas needs match time.
Atkinson did okay but ,particularly in the second half, fought a losing battle in midfield as Max was very much off colour,

Thompson was excellent in the first half but was given very little of the ball in the second half.

OFW had no chance with any of the goals and didn't have any difficult saves to make.

Unless things improve,it's going to be a long hard season.

Again defence very poor this is a worry another set piece was our downfall, Ronnie are you working on this?Oh sorry you have been for a while somehow they are not listening or the personnel are not up for the job.

Midfield lacking something not providing the balls for Lowe to run onto.
Thompson took his goals well with Lowe chasing down the keeper
for Thompson`s second and again the opposition looked fitter faster and passed the ball around better than us and they did not give it away as easy as we did.
Sodje not made my mind up about him yet perhaps JLAA would do a better job.
If that defence continues as they are doing we are going to get tonked.

Bright spots Koumas some wonderful balls from him today needs to out there from the start(when fully fit)also need Wallace back and at least Lowe has hit the back of the net it`s a start.

But come on Ronnie the side needs tweaking and even a kick up the backside but above all sort out that back four and midfield but at least there is some hope for the midfield(Koumas/Wallace) but that back four some how I think were stuck with them unless a loan deal comes in to shake them up.

its not just the defense that is the problem the midfield is a bit lightweight and we need somebody in there who can win the ball.

dont get me wrong lowe can finnish but i think he is too lazy the defence was awful and fonnies should of saved their 3rd goal. and robbo seems to draft in the the middle or right and leave gaps on the wing

Awful tactical set up AGAIN

midfield ripped apart defnsively by the extra man and that impacted on defence.

Thought ash did well apart from a slip up right at the end.

Foster useful in air but lack of pace will be found out (especially the tactics we're playing)

Thompson superb 1st half quiet 2nd

Lowe must be getting brassed off yet to have 1 decent chance created for him. great strikers goal at the end from him

Unless Ronnie wakes up that 442 (or the way we're playing it) isn't working against teams who play 433 we will continue to be torn apart. (Walsall/Mk dons etc...every time 433 we lose the possession/are cut open and can't play through the midfield)

Why he didn't alter the system either telling one of the forwards to tuck in and help the midfield or put someone in that role to do it god knows.

Lowe's our main striker-if we don't set up chances for him,he can't do his job [putting the ball in the net]properly/well. There's no way that he's lazy.

Fonners had no chance with their third goal. The big defender was allowed all the time in the world to control the ball, slowly swivel with it,decide where he was going to put it and finally shoot. No defender moved a muscle to stop him even though it was done almost in slow motion.

sadly holmes is a league of wales player, horwood was released by Hartlepool who got relegated, never thought I,d say this but goodison on fosters present form could do better.why didn,t we sign gareth Roberts and keep kay 1 more full back and we,d have been ok fear the worst 6 goals let in 2 games

I agree about Kay and Roberts and Roberts was more than willing to play for Tranmere again and wanted to settle down on the Wirral if possible, which he could still do, as Bury is about 1.5 hours commute by car from the Birkenhead area.

I think Ronnie missed a trick there to be honest.
