Trust Urges Council to Leave Lasting Legacy

Ahead of an expected decision next week about the Ingleborough Road and Woodchurch planning proposals by Rovers, the Tranmere Rovers Trust have released a statement urging council planners to leave a lasting legacy.....
With a decision finally expected next week in relation to the planning applications by Rovers for development at Ingleborough and Woodchurch, the Tranmere Rovers Supporters Trust is calling on Wirral's planning chiefs to leave a lasting legacy for generations of young people by approving plans to build a new housing development at Ingleborough Road and state-of-the-art sporting facilities at Woodchurch Leisure Centre.
Wirral Council's planning committee will sit next Thursday October 25th to deliver its long-awaited verdict on Tranmere Rovers' application to construct up to 90 new houses on the Ingleborough Road playing field and a new sports and training complex adjacent to Woodchurch Leisure Centre.
The proposal, which planning officers are recommending councillors approve, would deliver enormous benefits including state-of-the-art sports facilities for generations of young people, much-needed housing provision and a host of jobs.
It would also safeguard the future of Tranmere Rovers, which has been a focal point of the Wirral community for more than 125 years.
Ahead of next week's decision, Chairman Ben Harrison said...
"It is time for Wirral councillors to deliver the only verdict that would benefit local residents. The choice is between retaining a privately-owned, inaccessible field which is not fit for purpose and serves nobody, or giving approval to a transformational scheme which would benefit thousands of people for years to come by creating jobs and providing new housing and top-rate community sports facilities."
"Let us be very clear. Ingleborough and Woodchurch residents have voted overwhelmingly in favour of the schemes, while the Tranmere Hall Residents Association have submitted their approval to the council and have been integral to the design and planning process all along. Out of 166 representations submitted to the council, the majority were in favour."
"Our great year of sport has inspired young people across the country and the complex at Woodchurch would provide facilities that the peninsula badly needs. We are urging the planning committee to make the only sensible decision available to them."
The proposed new housing development at Ingleborough would incorporate a dedicated, landscaped memorial area at the southern entrance to the site to serve as a publicly accessible tribute to the pupils of Birkenhead Institute who lost their lives in the Great War.
Trust Vice-Chairman Mark Bartley added.....
"We appreciate this is an emotive issue but the plans make provision for a landscaped memorial area within the housing development. We have long argued that the overwhelming benefits of both schemes, combined with local residents' wishes, make this an acceptable compromise and have yet to hear a rational argument to dispute this."
"Tranmere Rovers counts a number of servicemen and women among their support and arguably does more than any other organisation on the Wirral to promote respect for our troops and those who paid the ultimate sacrifice for their country, whether it be through partnering the Royal British Legion, promoting the poppy appeal, raising thousands of pounds annually through collections or having special match-days dedicated to the armed forces."

However, whatever decision is made, the cost of this memorial ground IMHO is too much.
Also the club will still find itself in a lot of debt!
I am a local resident and am well informed about these issues and I am tired of the line the residents are in favour, they are not. Most want to keep the site as a sports field , not anything else.
They were not given that chuice!
The council called all their fixtures off at the weekend.
Ingleborough hosted four academy games against Rochdale.
This Sunday it is Stoke.
This mess of a field also has the youth train on it as well as day release academy players.
The grass is cut every week, it is tidy. It just looks a little need of a tart up, which it hasn't had since the nineties.
Lets face it! Get off your keyboard! Go down Sunday and watch our upcoming young talent that one day could play for our 1st team.
The whole site is a memorial, not just a corner with a plaque.
The club do need to move forward, the club is desperate for modern facilities.
Probably at the expense of this greenfield site, that is a wonderful sporting facility.
I think there's often a case of 'not in my back yard' when things like this arise. I can understand completely how people feel when they are approached with turning a field into housing, but in this case I feel a lot of people have jumped on the fact that there's a memorial linked to it.
Did many of the residents who are objecting truthfully know that there's a memorial there, or have they only found out now that there are plans to develop it?
It weakened their argument significantly I feel and If I recall, the question was asked once if not twice, so tose people not clarifying, were inevitably weakening their stance somewhat.
Then I ate his Liver.......... with some baked beans and a can of coke.
