Sheffield Wednesday v Tranmere Rovers Match Discussion

If you can't make Tranmere's game away at Sheffield Wednesday on Monday afternoon, why not join in the banter right here with other Rovers fans who are unable to attend......

Article Header - Match Discussion

For those fans who can't make some of the Rovers games this season, particularly the more costly and time consuming southern away games, we at Total Tranmere will be providing a Match Discussion Thread on the Site for every Rovers game.

The thread will allow you to discuss everything from the pre-match build up and starting line-up to the game it as it progresses and the post-match analysis.

Where possible, Total Tranmere staff will post up the starting line-up and substitutes on the thread as soon as it is made known at the game as well as a half-time report on how the game is going for the benefit of those who are unable to make it.

Fans at Bristol Rovers

Tranmere of course travel to Sheffield Wednesday on Monday afternoon in NPower League One so if you're not going to the game why not join in the banter right here while the game is going on?

Maybe if you have a friend or family member texting you from the game you can post their views here for others to see as the game progresses.

You could also use this thread to discuss other interesting scores throughout the league as well as discussing this game afterwards if you have been along to the game.

What you discuss below is up to you but hopefully it can all be focused on one thread to make it easier for everyone to use.

Admin staff will try and add the team and updates on the game on this thread where possible whilst there will also be our usual update service from our Twitter feed @totaltranmere so if you are not already following us it may be worth doing so!

Will do well if we get a point from this game would like Raven back in place of Holmes and Mr Ian Goodison back in the back four if fit , not sure about McGurk still lacks some thing
that`s not in him does not light up the pitch would like Robbo in his place.

3-0 to them. If we give them the headed chances we gave bury we'll be penalised.

Hopefully get another clean sheet and frustrate them to a 0-0 though!!

I think if Tranmere do win it will be 1-0. The confidence gained from a clean sheet might just extend to this game as well and possibly Goodison and Raven might play, but if so I suspect Les will want to keep it quiet and pretend they're still a few days away, so as to give the opposition one or two surprises (Sm100).

I doubt he'll change a back four that kept a clean sheet for defenders who are not fully fit

Seems they woke up for the second half pity we had not been asleep in the first ten minutes, looks like Les has found a new young striker *Ian Goodison* leading the line and getting a goal as well.

I sometimes wonder why he's never just stuck Goodison upfront on a permanent basis.

He scord 6 goals last season and he was only upfront for what must be about about 1/10 of the time he was used.

To me he's somewhat similar to Chris sutton, who could play back and front.

Wouldn't it be a really stupid irony, that Tranmere could have had a 20 goal a season striker for years and never noticed (Sm105).

I'm a little suprised though at Robinson not being on the bench. What is the issue with Robinson and Baxter playing together, it can't be a Lampard, Gerrard scenario they can't both be one dimensional players that only work well as a dropped off forward, they're too good for that.

i thought first half we were pretty poor rackubka was shocking made some good saves but made a lot of mistakes. second half the change of muzzy for welsh was needed there is no point laying him as a lone forward he looks lost with no one to help him.

the good points from the game was that we proved when we get going we can make a team of there pedegree panic and look on edge which was something we needed to do from the start

on a final not goodie upfront next week for me held the ball up better than muzzy picked some good passes and on top of it all only up front for 20mins and scored

Apart from the last 15 minutes we were so, so poor. Their was no excuses for just how poor we were, no disrespect to SWFC but they hardly had to put in any effort for 75 mins and then we perked up a bit.

Rachubka was awful, he made a few good saves BUT his commdanding, positioning and ability to come out and collect crosses was just non-existant.

McChrystal, or McHoof, was hoofing as per.. but today he was a shamble's defensively too.

Why does John Welsh think he's Paul Scholes and can ping 50 yard passes all over the place, he's in L1... he's a good player when he sticks to what he is good at, but we were losing the ball to much and it was just inviting pressure on to us.

Les's sub at half time was absolutely bizarre and had no effect at all... thank god for Goodison though. What a legend.

I suspect Robinson was not on the bench today because Wednesdays pitch is very wide and Robinson does not process the legs now to cover so much ground. The same applies if he was on the wing. Baxter covers twice as much ground when he plays just behind the striker. Robinson to me never seems to be fully fit or maybe Les plays him when he is carrying an injury.

First half performance today was shocking and unacceptable. We were like a rabbit caught in the headlights for the first twenty minutes, by which time it was already game over really.

Second half change bringing Welsh on for Tiryaki was crucial IMO. Welsh brought a bit of experience to the midfield, calmed things down and passed the ball around really well IMO. Also helped that we got Weir out of there and on to the wing because he was absolutely useless.

They took their foot off the gas after their second really and that's what let us back into the game. We snese a chance to try and take the game to them, their crowd started to get restless and Goodison scored a really good header from Danny Holmes' pin point cross. It must be noted too that Weaver made two fantastic saves, one from Akins and one from McGurk, whilst I think they also cleared two of our shots off the line late on.

It was too little too late though, damage done and we were our own worst enemies because late on we showed what a good team we can be when we played with urgency and force.

For me, Danny Holmes was MOTM. Really solid performance at right-back, especially second half, winning numerous tackles and putting in a fantastic cross for the goal.

He was having to cover centre-back half the time because our central-defenders kept going missing

Wednesday fan in peace.

I just thought I'd give my honest (trying not to be biased) opinion of yesterday. I thought the first half was the most one sided game I've seen all season at Hillsborough and Wednesday really should have been 4 or 5 up after we missed some sitters.

2nd half was like a totally different game. I'm not sure whether it was due to the substitution that Tranmere made or Wednesday being a bit nervous or complacent. I thought Tranmere were by far the better team second half without really creating much until the last 15 mins. I really thought you were going to equalise at the end though.

Overall I thought it was a fair result. All the best for the rest of the season.

You should have battered us pal but you sat back after the second when you could have gone for the killer third. We could have scraped something from the game late on but it would have been a little unjust.

Great atmosphere yesterday by the way...

About as good a summary of the game as you can get in my opinion.

As Mikey said the first 75 mins were just ridiculous. We were absolutely hopeless. I don't know what Mcrhystal and Taylor were playing at. Some awful basic errors and it could have been 10 at half time. The midfield were non-existent, Weir having his usual game where you don't even notice he is playing, except when he gives the ball away.

Muzzy is not good enough for this level. He can't hold the ball up, looks knackered after 20 minutes and we badly need a striker. Interesting to see les say we thought we had someone from Birmingham until Preston came in at the last minute. He typically scored yesterday.

You cannot start a game like we did yesterday and expect to get anything, especially against a team like them. We haven't played well for a while now, and I include the Bury game in that.

Interesting.

The Birmingham player in question was Jake Jervis.

Agree with much of what was written already. We havent played well for a long time now possibly as far back as the second half at Scunny. It was the age old problem on saturday go behind and have to try and claw our way back, problem being we often leave it too late or we allow too much damage to be done already. Wednesday should have been at least 4-0 up at half time we were playing THAT badly, we allowed them too much time and space on the ball and allowed Muzzy to become completely isolated. Everytime we won the ball back in defence we hoofed it long 99% of the time giving it back to Wednesday who would come forward again. First half we also sat far too deep and had Rachubka to thank for keeping the score down.

First 20 minutes of the second half went quite stagnant with us offering nothing and Wednesday seemingly happy to let the game peter out. On the rare occasion we actually played some football we actually scored all be it from an ageing centre half. After that Wednesday panicked and looked like they would concede a second. Time ran out tho and to be honest we cant say we deserved anything more than what we got. We cant play for 20 minutes and ignore the other 70. The same old problems that have been discussed time and again raised their heads.

We look like a side going backwards which is worrying. I would include the Bury game in this as well where we took all 3 when in reflection the game could have been very different had they taken their chances. Its a worrying pattern that is developing and January is turning into a very important month for us.
