Points Most Important as Wycombe are Dismantled

Enoch Showumni and Ash Taylor score in either half to earn Rovers a 2-0 home win over Wycombe Wanderers on Saturday in NPower League One. Mark Ridgway reports on the game.....
Enoch Showunmi’s first goal of the season was added to by Ash Taylor’s header as Rovers recorded a comfortable 2-0 victory over Wycombe Wanderers on Saturday. The performance wasn’t a vintage one however but after three winless matches it was all about getting the three points.
There was one change to the side that lost to Carlisle on Tuesday evening with new loan signing from Newcastle Ryan Donaldson replacing Joss Labadie in the starting line up which was as follows....

Tranmere started brightly and had the first goal attempt when Lucas Akins fired wide, after being set up by Donaldson.
On nine minutes Rovers took the lead when David Raven’s free kick was headed across goal by Ian Goodison and knocked down by Lucas Akins and this allowed Enoch Showunmi to turn in his first of the season from close range.
The visitors responded by earning a number of set pieces, which were comfortably defended by Rovers whilst at the other end Akins shot wide from Dave Buchanan’s cross.
After a promising start to his Rovers career though, Donaldson was to have a disappointing end to his afternoon when the youngsters surging run was brought to an end by a foul which resulted in him picking up a hamstring injury to be replaced by Joss Labadie.
Adam McGurk shot wide and Ash Taylor headed at Bull as the first half came to an end with Rovers still holding a 1-0 lead.

After a slow start to the second half the nerves were calmed when Rovers doubled the lead as Ash Taylor headed in at the near post from a John Welsh corner.
Matt Bloomfield headed onto the roof to the net for the Chairboys, whilst Zoom Bakayogo replaced first half substitute Labadie to protect the midfielder from a second booking after some persistent fouling.
There was little action for the remainder of the half as Rovers saw off any Wycombe threat and ground out the three points.

John Welsh
John Welsh was the best of the bunch with a battling performance as well as setting up Ash Taylor for the second goal at a crucial time.

Not a classic performance against them, but encouraging that training ground work infiltrates onto the pitch with alacrity, as that could be a gam changer against Preston if they lose by a 1 goal margin due to a set piece.
Then I ate his Liver.......... with some baked beans and a can of coke.
But teams who play badly and win soon move up the league - I'd sooner 'win ugly' at this time of the year to let other teams see we are in the mix for promotion.
