Rovers Lose Game Tom Daley Would be Proud Of

Mark Ridgway reports on Tranmere's undeserved 3-2 defeat away at Notts County on Tuesday night despite goals from John Welsh and Joss Labadie in either half in a game where two Rovers players were also sent off.......
Tranmere’s unbeaten start to the season ended in controversial fashion as a 97th minute penalty earned Notts County a 3-2 victory. Despite the way Notts County approached the game, bizarrely it was Rovers who finished with nine men and deserved at least a point from the visit to Meadow Lane, where relationships between the teams and supporters were further damaged after last years Prenton Park game.
John Welsh and Joss Labadie were on target for Rovers in either half, but David Raven and Adam McGurk later saw red for handballs as County stole the points late on.
Les Parry named an unchanged starting eleven from the side that beat Leyton Orient at the weekend meaning his side lined up as follows......

Notts County started the brighter side, with Lee Hughes testing Owain Fon Williams early on but soon after Adam McGurk’s long range effort had to be turned behind for a corner.
From the resulting corner, Martin Devaney stepped over Andy Robinsons centre and captain John Welsh fired the opener into the top corner from 12 yards.
County responded with Craig Westcarr shooting wide, Fon Williams denying Montano and Alan Sheenan hitting a free kick wide of the mark.
Rovers faced a set back when Ian Goodison had to be replaced by Michael Kay due to a mystery head injury which saw Alan Sheehan skulking away from the scene and this change resulted in David Raven moving to centre back.
County wasted chances late on in the opening half as Rovers went in for the break in the lead.

Seven minutes into the second half County were level when Julian Kelly’s superb volley went through a crowded area and into the goal to level.
Moments later McGurk’s long range drive hit the post, cannoned back off the County goalkeeper Stuart Nelson and behind for a corner.
This proved to be County's lucky turning point as just minutes later, County soon went in front out of nothing when Krystian Pearce’s effort came back off the crossbar and hit Fon-Williams on the back to go into the net. Lady luck was well and truly shining on the home side.
Weir and substitute Akins both tried in vain to get Rovers back in the game, but with ten minutes remaining the pendulum swung back towards Rovers.
Joss Labadie fired a low free kick which appeared to deflect past Nelson to level things up, just rewards to Rovers brave fight back.
However things would turn sour when the game entered the six minutes of injury time added on for an earlier injury to Fon Williams whom Notts County had spent much of the game trying to take out of it as firstly Raven received his marking orders for a handball, but more was to come.
McGurk soon saw red when the referee judged his goal line clearance to come off his hand and a penalty was given by his assistants.
In a cruel twist of fate Jeff Hughes fired home in the 97th minute, leaving Rovers distraught as well as angered, hopefully this frustration will be taken out on Sheffield United on Saturday.

Enoch Showumni
Once again Owain Fon Williams had a very good game and some of the Rovers players seemed to nominate him at the end of the game for the award but Enoch Showumni worked his socks off upfront and perhaps showed County what they had missed out on after their attempts to sign him a week ago.

If you can point out to me more than one occasion of Notts players diving I'll be amazed - you know, so that the title of the article is warranted - and you conveniently left out the facts. Notts had 3 times as many shots on target (15 to 5), 5 more corners, committed fewer fouls (despite getting bookings like Nelson's - "time wasting" when he didn't even have the ball) and had more possession.
But don't let the facts get in the way of a good bit of bias!

Your players are nothing but divers and having a ref that had got a hard on all night to send someone off was only making it easier for your lot to get away with it! You got what you deserved last night and can't wait for us to beat you at your ground... Again!!
