Robbie Weir’s first competitive goal earned Rovers an opening day 1-0 victory over Chesterfield at Prenton Park on Saturday.

The goal came with 16 minutes left, as Rovers were rewarded for their impressive display, earning their first opening day win for five years.

Owain Fon-Williams, Martin Devaney and Mustafa Tiryaki all made their Rovers debuts, with Enoch Showunmi missing through injury meaning that Rovers lined up  as follows.........

The game began in tight fashion, with no clear chances early on.  Martin Devaney forced the first save on 15 minutes, when he skipped past three challenges and had his low effort saved.

Mark Randall hit a free kick over for the Shireites, before Andy Robinson and Adam McGurk headed off target for the hosts, before Tiryaki drilled wide from long range.

After the break Welsh shot at Lee, the impressive Devaney then crossed for McGurk, but his effort was charged down, and cleared.

Rovers got their reward for their attacking football when Weir latched onto McGurks thrown in, before prodding past Lee to give Rovers the lead.

Lucas Akins then replaced Tiryaki, and Robinson shot wide when looking to double the lead.

Despite being a goal down, Chesterfield showed a lack of ambition, and Tranmere were the team looking to added to their tally, which was refreshing to see.

Devaney, Akins and other sub Joss Labadie all had effort kept out, as Rovers secured a valuable 3 points as they started as they meant to go on.

Adam McGurk

In a wide wide position McGurk was a constant threat, providing deadly crossed much like Devaney, and showed good great intelligence in assisting the goal.

Nice to see Mcgurk picked out as MOTM. He was very tricky and put in some great crosses. Praying he stays injury free.
