Mark Ridgway reports on Tranmere's fully deserved 4-0 home win against play-off chasing Exeter City at Prenton Park on Monday afternoon thanks to a Lucas Akins brace and goals from Michael Kay and Enoch Showumni....

Tranmere confirmed their safety in League One on Easter Monday afternoon after a comfortable 4-0 victory over Exeter City.

Rovers were dominant from start to finish over the Grecians who were still chasing a playoff spot prior to the match but whom by the end were out of the race completely.

Four good quality goals from the home side included a brace from Lucas Akins, as survival was confirmed whilst Michael Kay also scored his first for the club and Enoch Showunmi was also on the score sheet.

Rovers lined up with two changes to the side that had drawn 1-1 away at Hartlepool just three days earlier with Zoumana Bakayogo and the injured Mark McChrystal replaced in the side by Dale Jennings and Andy Robinson in a 4-4-2 formation....

After dominance throughout the first half from Rovers, Michael Kay opened the scoring just before half time when he was found by Dale Jennings and the right-back cut inside and smashed an unstoppable left foot drive into the top corner, giving Krysiak in the Exeter goal no chance.

The goal came after Andy Robinson had smashed the crossbar with a volley from long range and after Enoch Showunmi had missed from close range.

Exeter’s best chance had come mid-way through the half, when Jamie Cureton drilled an effort across goal and just wide.

After the break the game continued in the same fashion and Tranmere deservedly doubled the lead when poor Exeter defending allowed Lucas Akins to lob in his first goal for the club in spectacular fashion.

Soon after, the lively Jennings teed up Enoch Showunmi to drill in a third from a tight angle, giving Rovers a 3-0 lead.

The rout was then completed in injury time when substitute Adam McGurk crossed perfectly for Lucas Akins to head home his second, and complete the scoring.

Special mention should go to Ash Taylor who was excellent at the back for Rovers on a day when all the players were good but for sheer involvement in the game and some great moments of skill the award goes to Robbo!
