After progressing to the semi-finals of the Johnstone Paints Trophy on Tuesday, Tranmere Rovers will be hoping to make it two wins on the bounce on Saturday when they take on Plymouth Argyle.

Rovers are yet to win back to back home games this season, so Les Parry will be keen for his side to pick up a vital three points against a side who they could over take on Saturday if they win by a two goal margin.

Plymouth, managed by Peter Reid, are a strong side though, with a couple of goalscorers in their side, and Rovers will have to be wary of their opposition as they go in search of a win.

Previous Meetings:

Tranmere and Plymouth haven't met since the 2003/04 season, a year which saw Plymouth secure promotion to the Championship as winners of League One.

The two results the team were involved in that season were somewhat inconsistent to one another, as both sides secured a home win, though by somewhat different scorelines.

When the two sides first met at Home Park, John McMahon was caretaker manager of Tranmere Rovers following the dismissal of Ray Mathias.

What followed for Tranmere was sheer embarassment, as Rovers were hammered 6-0 by the Pilgrims, a result that left Tranmere in 21st place in the League One table.

It all started going wrong for Tranmere as early as the seventh minute, with Friio opening the scoring for the home side, before Wotton and Gilbert added to the scoresheet before half time.

After the break, despite a double substitution by McMahon, Rovers continued to fail, with Keith, Evans and Norris adding further goals to pile on the embarrassment for Rovers as they suffered a shocking 6-0 defeat.

When the two sides next met in February, Brian Little was in charge of Tranmere and he had managed to sort the Wirral outfit out somewhat.

Despite Plymouth being top of the table before kick off, Tranmere managed to pick up an excellent 3-0 win, with Eugene Dadi opening the scoring for Tranmere on 19 minutes as he netted with a header from Mickey Mellon's corner.

Four minutes later Iain Hume doubled Tranmere's lead, converting from Gareth Roberts' pass, though Dadi was once again involved in the goal, before Dadi got his second and Tranmere's third of the match just after half-time, netting his twelfth of the season after dispossessing the Plymouth defender.

Playing in League One for the first time in six years, Plymouth Argyle have had a solid start to the season, especially on the road, though they would certainly have preferred to have picked up more points in general.

The Pilgrims started their six match sequence with successive draws, firstly against Colchester United (1-1) before picking up another point on the road thanks to another 1-1 draw, this time with Rochdale.

Successive wins on the road followed for Plymouth as they beat  Swindon Town 3-2, with Bradley Wright-Phillips scoring a 90th minute winner, before they beat Swindon's West Country neighbours Cheltenham Town 2-0 in the Johnstone Paints Trophy.

However, following these wins have been successive defeats, as firstly Plymouth were defeated 2-0 by Notts County before they lost 4-2 to Oldham at Boundary Park, playing a large part of the game with only nine men.

Other notable away results for Plymouth this season include a 1-0 win at Southampton on the opening day of the season, whilst they lost their only other away game 2-1 against Walsall.

Plymouth Argyle have played seven away games so far this season and picked up eight of an available 21 points, this thanks to two wins, two draws and three defeats, an identical record to Tranmere's form at Prenton Park.

Notable results at home for Peter Reid's side this season include wins over Bristol Rovers (3-1), Huddersfield Town (2-1) and Sheffield Wednesday (3-2).

Plymouth come into this game in fifteenth place in League One having played fifteen games and picked up 19 points, this thanks to five wins, four draws and six defeats.

Tranmere Rovers form at home looks solid on paper, with just one defeat in their last six at Prenton Park, though manager Les Parry would no doubt prefer Rovers to be picking up more wins on home soil.

The Wirral outfit started their six match sequence with an excellent 1-0 win over Peterborough, their first home win of the season, before Enoch Showunmi scored a second half equaliser as Tranmere drew 1-1 with Charlton.

On-loan defender Scott Wootton was Rovers' next scorer at Prenton Park as he scored another late equaliser to secure Tranmere a 1-1 draw with high flying Brighton before Rovers suffered a hugekly disappointing 3-0 defeat at home to Brentford.

Rovers haven't lost on home soil since however, starting with a 0-0 Johnstone Paints Trophy draw with Stockport, eventually winning the match on penalties, before Dale Jennings and Ian Thomas-Moore scored two apiece as Tranmere secured a 4-2 home win over MK Dons in their most recent home match.

Tranmere have played four other home games so far this season, though they didn't win any of them, with the most notable result being a 0-0 Johnstone Paints Trophy draw with Accrington Stanley.

Les Parry's side have played seven home league games so far this season, picking up eight of an available 21 points thanks to two wins, two draws and three defeats.

Notable results away from home for Tranmere include league wins over Walsall (4-1) and Bristol Rovers (1-0) as well as cup wins over Bury (1-0) and Walsall (1-0).

Les Parry's side currently lie in 21st place in League One, having picked up 16 of an available 45 points from 15 games, thanks to four wins, four draws and seven defeats.

Double Hit: 

As well as current Tranmere assistant-manager Kevin Summerfield, and former Rovers winger Paul Hall, another player to have represented both clubs is minature midfielder David Beresford.

Beresford was a successful lower league winger with Oldham Athletic, making his debut for the club in the 1994/95 season.  He made 75 appearances for the club over a three year spell with the Latics, though many of these came from the bench, whilst he also spent time on loan at Swansea before leaving for Huddersfield in 1997 for £350,000.

At Huddersfield however, Beresford, just 21, never really cemented his place in the side.  He made just 42 appearances over four years with the club, netting three goals, and spent time out on loan at Preston and Port Vale, before being released and joining Hull City in 2001.

It was at Hull where Beresford first teamed up with Brian Little, and possibly where he was most successful, as in just a year at the club, he made 47 appearances, missing just five league games, before joining Plymouth on a free transfer at the end of the season.

Beresford however struggled at Plymouth too, and despite staying with the Pilgrims for 15 months, he played just 19 times for the club, eleven times for the bench, and eventually left in  November 2003 for Tranmere, this after a loan spell with Macclesfield.

At Tranmere, Beresford was very much a bit part player and never got a consistent run in the team.  Despite this though, he still scored some crucial goals, including one in the play-offs, and played in some big matches for the club, helping them to the F.A. Cup quarter finals in his first season at the club and to the play-off semi-finals in his next.

However, he was released in July 2005, having made 65 appearances for the club, joining Macclesfield Town on a free-transfer.

After one-year at Macclesfield, in which time he scored once in 22 games, Beresford retired from football and is now a PE teacher in Rochdale.

One To Watch:

Brother of Manchester City and England winger Shaun, Bradley Wright-Phillips is an undoubted talent who is already showing his goalscoring form at this level this season.

Like his brother, Wright-Phillips started his career at City, but made just three starts in 40 appearances for the club between 2004 and 2006.

He joined Southampton for an undisclosed "nominal" fee in 2006 and his career began to show some promise.

Over three years with the Saints, Wright-Phillips played 121 times for the club, about half of these appearances from the bench, scoring 25 goals in the process, with his most prolific season being his first with the club, when he netted eleven times.

In 2009, Southampton released the player and he joined Plymouth Argyle on a free-transfer, though he couldn't help the club battle against relegation from the Championship in his first year with the club, scoring just four goals in the process.

Since relegation though, Wright-Phillips' form has finally taken off, and he has already netted ten times this season, including five goals in his last three league games.

A pacey, strong front man, Wright-Phillips, who is now 25, wears the number ten shirt for Plymouth and will have to be monitored closely by Tranmere's defence.

Team News:

Jones' Prediction:  Tranmere Rovers 2-0 Plymouth Argyle

I think Tranmere Rovers have a good chance of winning this match, despite Plymouth being a reasonably strong side on the road.

Rovers have improved in recent weeks and their home form is looking stronger too.  They will be hoping to cement this and move out of the drop zone with a win against Plymouth on Saturday, something they are well capable of.

For Tranmere, it will be interesting to see whether Les Parry continues with 4-4-2 or reverts to 4-3-3 after playing the formation in the 1-0 win over Bury on Tuesday.

If Dale Jennings is fit, then I supsect the Rovers boss will play a 4-3-3 formation, with Lucas Akins making way for Jennings, whilst Bakayogo and Labadie will most likely be replaced by two of Mendy, Fraughan and Blanchard.

Rovers must defend solidly against a strong attacking side, and the key to that could be Blanchard sweeping up in front of the back four, whilst Rovers must also continue to push forward and supprot their attackers, which may be tough to do without Joss Labadie.
