Les Parry was disappointed with his side's defeat at home to Championship side Swansea City on Tuesday evening which saw them eliminated from the Carling Cup after taking the lead in the first half through Enoch Showunmi's first ever Rovers goal......

After Rovers were defeated in the second round of the Carling Cup at home to Championship side Swansea City on Tuesday night, Rovers Boss Les Parry was upbeat but disappointed after seeing Tranmere surrender a one-goal half time advantage given to them by Enoch Showunmi.

Speaking to the Official Tranmere Rovers Website, Les Parry said....

"I thought we played really well and created some chances in the first half. We'll play a lot worse than that and win this season. I was gutted for the lads because of the amount of effort they put in. Swansea are a good footballing side and you have to work hard to stop them playing, and our lads did."

"You tend to ignore the last goal because it happened when we were pushing on and it was the last kick of the game. The first one was a fluke and the second was an excellent goal that takes a lot of stopping. Had Enoch's header gone in we'd be feeling different now."

"We can take some heart from the performance. Sometimes results like that take a little bit of getting over because of the performance, but they'll be off tomorrow and back in on Thursday and they'll be bright and breezy."

"The thing with Ian Thomas-Moore has dragged on and on. It's no secret that when we took him off [against Oldham] he was unhappy and he showed it in a way that was unacceptable. I've let it roll and backed Ian all this time but enough is enough. I thought for the harmony of the squad that I had to do something." 

"John Welsh has the respect of all the lads and is the ideal replacement. Ian wasn't happy and I didn't expect him to be, but he accepted it because it was the right decision."

"I'm going to go and have a chat with him and see what the current state is. We've still got the offer on the table of a further year and he's holding out for a pay rise as well which we won't give. I need to sit down with him and say that 'I need to know that if we're going to stick to our guns and just offer the extra year what are you going to do', because I'm pretty sure he doesn't want to leave. Depending on his answer we'll be doing things over the next couple of days."

Due to various commitments last night was the first match I got to see since pre-season and I actually came away feeling a bit positive. The lads put in a good performance, Blanchard looked solid (or about as solid as a defender can look when they've shipped 3!) and that was probably the best I've seen Mclaren play,dropping back and winning the ball. My main concern is with Gornell and ITM. For most of the game they were playing so deep and wide that we were playing as a 4-5-1, or 4-1-4-1 with Mclaren in front of the back 4. By playing in that way Enoch was completely isolated and Welsh and Labadie were not getting forward either to support him. If we continue playing in that way then it is difficult to see where the goals are going to come from, other than set pieces and the route 1 punt upfield that Enoch scored from. We could maybe consider a Benitez style 4-2-3-1, with 2 wingers and an attacking midfielder (Joss Labadie?) supporting a lone striker, except we don't have any wingers. If the players can give that much commitment every game and if Les & the coaches can sort out a way to get Gornell & ITM into the game more, playing further forward and supporting Enoch, then I think we can do ok this season.
