Weather Report

A disappointing day on the Wirral where the sky was cloudy and overcast, with little glimpses of sun and getting windier as the day has progressed.

Crowd

5,417 fans saw 68 minutes of the game and then no more than 4,000 continued to watch for the final 25 minutes of the game.  A fairly average attendance that is likely to drop unless Rovers conjure a win away at Carlisle next Saturday.

Referee Watch

Mr Tierney - conned all too easily by Charlton’s dive and roll around antics, however it wasn’t his fault that Tranmere lacked effort and didn’t want to win the game.  I thought he wasn’t too bad on the whole and tried to let the game run freely and played a couple of good advantages.  Booking Gornell and Logan however, were both debatable decisions.

Best Moment

There really was no best moment, maybe the changes at half time which brought an improved second half, Michael Ricketts performance changed the game after Barnes finally subbed Mahon and Shuker, who have been appauling so far.

Worst Moment

The worst moment for me today was when they added insult to injury with a long distance free kick creeping through about 5 players and Luke Daniels to add to charlton’s tally.  Talk about rubbing salt in the wounds!

Funniest Moment

Could’ve been one of a few things, either Nicky Bailey rolling over about 6 times after jumping over Logan’s leg, or the comical Llerra crashing to the floor pretending he’d been elbowed in the face by Terry Gornell and then lying there playing dead.

Tranmere Man of the Match

Terry Gornellfought hard and matched the strength of the opposition so he gets the vote from me.  Ricketts had a decent game when he came on looking confident on the ball and played it about better than the rest of the team.

Connections

Tranmere manager John Barnes had a loan spell at Charlton in 1999 where he made 12 appearances and didn’t score.  Ex Tranmere manager Ronnie Moore also had a spell with the Addicks.

Rovers Fans

Tranmere fans were silenced when Charlton scored their first goal after starting off with a couple of decent Super White Army chants.  However when the fourth went in for Charlton the singing started again, with Ronnie Moore’s name being chanted along with “you don’t know what you doing” chant aimed at Mr Barnes.

Charlton Fans

Made noise from start to finish and they should do really with that kind of result.  They even joined in with our fans sarcastic cheering when our players passed the ball to another Rovers player.

Summary

If you thought Leeds was bad at least we had the excuse of being away then, this was unforgivable and Barnes is unlikely to be a hero with the fans right now.

Entertainment Value

Must’ve been good for Charlton supporters seeing four goals in an away game all to the away side, but with us gifting them goals it can’t have been that good to watch from a neutral take, it was hardly a game where both sides attack, it wasn’t even a game where both teams tried.
