Gornell on Target in Preston Reserve Win

Terry Gornell scored his second goal in a week this afternoon as Rovers' Reserve side beat Preston North End's second string 1-0 in a game in which Rovers also fielded no fewer than three trialists.

After his first senior goal for Rovers on Saturday in the 1-1 draw against MK Dons, Terry Gornell continued in the same vein for the Reserves this afternoon as Shaun Garnett's side beat Preston North End's second string 1-0 at Chorley Town F.C's ground.
After a goalless first half, it took Rovers just three minutes of the second half to find the opening when a Dave Wilson corner was converted by Terry Gornell to give the visitors the lead which they held on to to earn their first win of 2009 and climb above Preston in the League in the process.
The game was also significant for the fact that three trialists featured in the starting eleven for Rovers in this game.

Gary Woods is an 18-year old Goalkeeper who has recently had twelve months out injured but has been at Old Trafford for a number of years whilst right-back Michael Scott also hails from a Premier League Club, this time Liverpool.
Scott, who is 19, was born on the Wirral and started out as a striker before being moved to the right-back position to try and get more games under his belt.
The final trialist to feature in the game was Sascha Donougher who is also 19 and was born in Germany but has joint German and English Nationality. Sascha has had spells with Major League Soccer side New York Red Bulls in the U.S and has more recently played for KSV Baunatal.
Speaking after the game, Reserves Manager Shaun Garnett was pleased with the 1-0 win....
"It was a good performance from the lads on a poor pitch. They adapted their game to suit the conditions and played very well".
Tranmere Team: Woods, Scott, G.Jones, Holmes, Corrigan, Henry, Mackreth, Donougher, Macauley, Gornell, Wilson.
Subs Not Used: Kennedy, Denson, Richardson, Ashcroft.

Does anybody know anything about the trialists?
Age, team they play for etc, where they play?
Good to see Terry scoring again, any goal in competitive games is going to give him more confidence, and these ones from corners make him look like a dangerous target from set plays...
From a bit of research, i.e. Googling, I've found that Sascha Donougher is a central midfielder, who has played 10 full games for KSV Baunatal in the Hessenliga and scored once, which is a regional league for the district of Hessen (or Essen if your learning German), and that league is the same sort of level as our Conference Premier. Whether he played much for NY Red Bull isn't said, but his transfers have all been "free transfers", and he also had a spell at the Wolfsburg U19s and Armenia Bielefeld's youth team, both of which have their senior sides in the German top flight.
He could be one to watch if he shines for our youth side

That Liverpool link though are definitely trying to outline that Scott is a right-back, they say it enough times. He could be one for next season if he plays well enough, especially when Shotton goes back to Stoke or if he picks up a little niggle we may have some support. Plus he could probably hit the ball as well as Shotton with his experience as a striker. Maybe Garnett thinks he could be our very own Shotton

I would be a bit hesitant about a player who has been injured for a full year to be honest, no disrespect to Woods, but there's a lot of players like Gary Neville, Louis Saha, Alan Smith, and even when we had Simon Haworth, who never fully recover from such a long lay-off and spend as much time injured as they do playing during a season, although we will have to wait and see with him...

I'm a United fan, not sure where this 'injured for the last 12 months' thing has come from with Gary Woods but it's not the case. He's played plenty of games for our reserves and academy this season, the last being on 18/12/08 (he's either been on the bench or out on trials since then), so injuries aren't anything to worry about with him.
