Coca-Cola League One at Saltergate

The Superwhite Army are on the road again on Saturday as Tranmere travel to Saltergate to face Chesterfield in League One.

Both sides were involved in Carling Cup action in midweek with both teams games going into extra-time and in Chesterfield’s case, penalties where they overcame Championship side Wolves at Saltergate.  Rovers on the other hand were defeated in extra-time by another Championship side Hull City at the KC Stadium on Tuesday night after initially taking the lead through captain Shane Sherriff.

Chesterfield will have several faces that will be familiar to Rovers fans with Reuben Hazell, Wayne Allison, Paul Hall and Shane Nicholson all part of the Spireites squad this season.  Hall and Allison are joint top scorers for Chesterfield so far this season along with Caleb Folan, all with two goals each.

When the sides met last season, Rovers took maximum points from the two games, scoring six goals in the process.  In the early season meeting at Saltergate, goals from Mike Jackson and a bullet of a free-kick from Gareth Roberts sealed and excellent 2-0 win for Rovers, their first away win of the season.

When the sides met again at Prenton Park earlier this year, Rovers fell behind to a stunning strike from on loan Jamie O’Hara but it wasn’t long before a rare brace from Sam Aiston and a goal from Chris Greenacre put Rovers in the driving seat.  A fourth goal from on loan Steven O’Leary made the scoreline comfortable for Rovers in a 4-1 win.

Apart from last season’s victory though, Rovers track record at Saltergate is not too encouraging having only won six times in 45 meetings (losing 28 and drawing 11).  Their overall record both home and away against the Spireites is not much better either.
