Southampton Pip The Academy to Group Win!!

Back-to-Back Titles

If you have been following the fortunes of The Academy and the progress of 'Football Icon' winner, Sam Hurrell, the following is a round-up of what has been happening to The Academy since my last report when the Academy were beaten by Birmingham City at the beginning of April.

The defeat against Birmingham ended a run of six STRAIGHT wins but in the The Academy's final two games against Bristol City and Cardiff City they bounced back to win 2-0 and 1-0 respectively.

The game against Cardiff City was played at Stamford Bridge, the day before the FA Cup semi-final against Liverpool and it was a game I was hoping to attend, but due to work commitments I wasn't to.

The win put The Academy at the top of their Group table and four points clear of Southampton who had two games in hand and the incentive to win the group was that The Academy would play the national semi-final at home and if they got to the final, that would be played at home too!

But alas Southampton got the four points they needed and although both Academy's finished with identical records it was the youth of Southampton that progressed to the National stage virtue of a superior goal difference.

For the record the team that played Cardiff at Stamford Bridge was:

Hamann, Hutchinson, Worley, Cork, Bertrand (Hurrell 80), Bridcutt, F Ferreira (Watkins 74), Furman, Cummings, Fernandes (J Smith 65), Sinclair.

Subs Not Used: Russell, Saarelma

Jimmy Smith was booked and the only goal of the game was scored by Ryan Bertrand after 18 mins.

COME ON CHELS!!
