…or Manchester City or Real Madrid…or even stay at Old Trafford.  It’s not often the word sensational is used in a truthful context but the news that Wayne Rooney wants to leave Man Utd can only be described thus.  So where could he end up?  Could you see him in the blue shirt of Chelsea?

Here are some reasons why he could be in Ancelotti´s squad list:

She’s the boss

(1)    Coleen: I’ve a feeling this could be the most influential factor on Rooney’s destiny.  There are reasons why he is beholden to Coleen at the moment – and what “her indoors” wants she usually gets.  With her media activities and the social circles she now moves in, she could be champing at the bit to live in London.

(2)    Pots.  Rooney wants silverware:  Chelsea can offer this, and he has now officially said he is not convinced that Man Utd can match his ambition in that area.  (I can’t believe I’ve just written that sentence!  Man Utd not ambitious enough to win trophies?!  It’s a bit like saying “Well, I’m not convinced the Archbishop of Canterbury will pray too much in the future.”)  There HAS to be something that Rooney and his agent know or suspect with regard to the clubs impending finances and consequential ability to bring in top players…or, he’s lying about the “ambition” factor and just wants more money than Man Utd are prepared to offer (although that would also seem doubtful).

(3)    The Chelsea England boys connection:  A little bird tells me (in other words, I’m imagining this, based upon some questionable rumours…and some intuition!) that Rooney gets on particularly well with the Chelsea boys in the England squad.  Have tales of the grass being greener “daaawn saarf” finally turned his head?

(4)    I haven’t mentioned money yet have I?  Certainly, with the limited amount of time left on his contract at Man Utd, Ferguson and Gill are not in a position to demand Ronaldo type big bucks for their star player.  Who knows?  He may even be available for 20 – 25m.  This relatively low transfer fee for such a player does leave quite a bit of room for wages - perhaps to an unprecedented level despite our comparative frugality in the transfer market in recent seasons. 

Nouveau Riche (more “nouveau” than ourselves anyway!)

And what about Man City?  Yes indeed, and they would have to be at least joint favourites with ourselves for his signature.

They offer two very persuasive arguments in support of those who believe Rooney will be playing half his games at Eastlands; they can offer galactic wages and he wouldn’t have to move house.  But would Ferguson allow it?  Would he rather make him play out his contract for the next two seasons?  He didn’t with Tevez of course – but then Tevez didn’t belong to Man Utd anyway.

An Englishman in Spain

Real Madrid:  No doubt you all heard Mourinho´s comments the other night.  “Los Merengues”  (that’s “The Meringues” – as in “Lemon meringue pie” as they play in white, for all you peasants out there that didn’t know that!) could probably offer the wages (as one Chelsea fan put it “They are the Enron of European football”) although they would have to offload quite a few surplus stars to do so (and Benzema would be tempting for Ferguson), Sun, sand (Well ok!  No Sand!) and plenty of dusky, lithe, doe-eyed, olive skinned beauties around.  I just can’t see Rooney abroad though and I understand he has a sister who is ill and that he wouldn’t want to be that far away from her. 

It has to be either ourselves or Man City…or…he kisses and makes up with Ferguson and stays at Man Utd?  Nope!  Too much has been said and too much damage inflicted I believe.

There is another question before we get too excited though:  Do we need Rooney?  Given the current form of our strikers over the last few seasons, I would say no – but given the ages of our strikers I would say yes, and in the meantime, can you imagine a front strike pair of say, Drogba and Rooney?!

Still, let’s hope if Rooney does make the trip to Stamford Bridge we at least give him a thorough medical eh?!

Convincing arguments as usual although I am not convinced 'her indoors' will want to move to London bearing in mind she told Rooney she doesn't want to be a wag and go to games anymore.

A wag she will become if the move did come off

Still time will tell

I actually have less trouble imagining Torres in a Chelsea shirt.
