Ex-Chelsea manager José Mourinho reminded Barcelona of their extreme good fortune when Referee Ovrebo ensured the Catalan club practically received a bye into the Champions League final at our expense during last seasons 2nd leg semi-final at Stamford Bridge last season.

Barcelona’s Xavi had claimed that the Portuguese referee for last nights tie between Inter and Barcelona had favoured the Italian side because their manager was Portuguese. 

The controversial points were the third goal scored by Inter which looked offside and a penalty incident which was not given to Barcelona (although replays later showed that the Barcelona player had dived). 

After Xavi had vented his frustration in the tunnel, Mourinho took advantage of reminding Barcelona and the football world of last season’s incredible refereeing at Stamford Bridge.  Many Chelsea fans and the more balanced neutrals feel that we were robbed by a Norwegian referee beholden to UEFA who themselves were anxious to stage a Barcelona/Man Utd final and keep their sponsors happy. 

"I don't think the referee influenced the result of the game,” said Mourinho. 

"I feel sorry the linesman gave offside to Milito when he was facing the goalkeeper in the first five minutes of the game as he was not offside.  

"It is really a pity they have such short memories - because one year ago my boys at Chelsea were crying and Barcelona's players were laughing with the referee.  

"You cannot compare that with the ref here as the ref here has not influenced the result.  

"But the referee at Stamford Bridge put Chelsea out of a final they deserved to play in and gave Barcelona the chance to win the final and everything else they won after that."  (to the Italian media, Mourinho described Ovrebo as an "historic referee" ).

 

Well said José!  If last seasons events had prejudiced any other club it would have gone down as a black day for European football, the media would have been up in arms in outrage and huge weight would have been given to the claims by many that the huge financial sums at stake have paved the way for corruption at key moments in football competition.  As it was, it was us that suffered, and not being an established member of the old guard of clubs favoured by the authorities and sponsors, last season´s disgusting events are played down whenever the subject arises. 

BUT We shall NEVER forget it.
