Chelsea Football Club have signed young Serb midfielder (albeit with a Slovak passport) Nemanja Matic on a four-year deal. As yet no fee appears to be touted by the media but I would estimate 4-6m paid into the accounts of MFK Kosice.

The official site describes him as “highly regarded around Europe as a talent to look out for in the future” – no doubt this is an Arnesen signing. 

Good to see us signing young players although I wonder just how he would squeeze in to our current already bloated with talent midfield.  It is possible that he is considered the eventual replacement for Ballack who has a year to run on the recent extension he signed in the summer. 

Matic is crocked at the moment with a broken metatarsal which he suffered during the recent Under 21 European Championships in Sweden this summer although is said to be healing well and he could be available for selection around the end of September/beginning of October. 

'I know a lot about Chelsea, I have been following them,' said Matic. 

'I play together with Branislav in the national team and have spoken to him about Chelsea. The first time when I met him to play in the national team I asked a couple of questions.” 

“I am a solid midfield player, I have a lot to offer and for sure to progress and I will show everyone why I am at Chelsea.”

Matic stands at 6ft 4ins tall and was actually on trial at Middlesbrough last January (It would be interesting to know why our old chums from the north-east didn’t pursue the matter – was it because of football or economical reasons?). 

“I am a central-midfielder, and I know I am not well known but I have physical power and I am quite a technical, left-footed player," he added.

“Since the age of 18 I have been at Kosice, and before that I had played in the youth team of Red Star Belgrade.” 

No doubt we can expect a song with the word “automatic” in it if he does well at the Bridge….
