The Times report that Chelsea have made a “resounding statement of intent” with a substantial £45 million bid for Atletico Madrid striker Sergio Agüero. This appears to be the clubs first bid for a player in the summer transfer window.

Agüero is the one name that has been on the wish list of many Chelsea fans and represents a striker of top-notch quality that would make a significant addition to our forward line. 

The 21-year-old would also provide a solution for the absence of Didier Drogba for the African Nations and other matches – including any that may result from any ban handed out by UEFA from the Champions League after events of the match against Barcelona at Stamford Bridge.

Pini Zahavi yet again seems to have his finger in the pie as he did in the past with Chelsea’s bigger transfers and has been brokering the deal along with Chelsea chief executive Peter Kenyon.

The offer reportedly includes a net 100k a week salary and is initially below the £45 million bid – that amount would be reached once certain clauses based on appearances and other targets have been fulfilled.

So where does this leave our enquiries for 19-year-old Alexandre Pato of AC Milan?  Do we intend to land one of Pato or Agüero or do we want both?  If so, what are the implications for our current strike force including Anelka and Di Santo?   Surely this would not signal the sale of Drogba?

Pato has gone on record as saying he would like to talk to Ancelotti with his agent stating that his player would be open to a move.

“Before I decide my future, I want to talk to Ancelotti and then Milan officials. He is an extraordinary man. It’s thanks to Ancelotti that I have been able to emerge at AC Milan,” said Pato.

Aguero could be a great asset to Chelsea. He's got a great scoring record and is still only young. Whether he's the right solution for Drogbas absence, i'm not yet convinced, but obviously Ancelotti is, as he is prepared to spend £45,000,000, which is an absurd amount of money for such a young talent that, lets be fair, is still unproven. The same goes with Pato.

Well this is the fee being quoted in the press - which normally ends up being lower when the deal is done. We are still looking at 35m or so I supppose which is a lot of money for a young player I agree.

I can only hope that IF we do sign him then he eventually seems "cheap". !

"I have no information about this offer from Manchester United," Segui told Calciomercato.it. "I have not been contacted by anyone, nor by other teams.

"Inter? I have not had any conversations with them. Honestly, I don't know if Atletico have met other clubs."
