Joe Cole has had surgery on ruptured cruciate ligaments this morning and consequently ruled out for the remainder of the season. Joe picked up the knee injury in midweek in the FA Cup match against Southend after an innocuous tackle and after appearing to have recovered, collapsed on the pitch just minutes later whilst preparing to try and pass a defender.
Joe hasn’t been in the best of form this season but was still capable of producing key moments to help the team score at any given time.
Luiz Felipe Scolari said:
"I am very sad for Joe to have suffered this injury and I am disappointed to have lost a very important player."
Chelsea captain John Terry also spoke on the blow for the team and Cole:
"We're all behind Coley to get fit as soon as possible. He's going to be a big miss for us and I keep on saying he's the one who really opens things up in tight moments."
Cole will now miss England's World Cup qualifier with Ukraine, the friendlies with Spain and Slovakia and possibly the qualifiers against Kazakhstan and Andorra in June.
This isn’t the first serious injury for Cole.He missed almost an entire season a few years ago and had to bite the bullet and work patiently in the gym – something he said he would never want to go through again.
We wish him the fastest recovery possible.
Now of course, it will be interesting to see if the club plump for a replacement in the January transfer market or Kalou to be given more of a run out. Scolari also has what would be popular with the fans back-up with youngsters such as Stoch and Kakuta.
"It is born out of hypocrisy and fundamental insecurity. There have been two kids on the block for the past 12 years. Suddenly, there is a third and that one is threatening to be more successful than the others and they don’t like it." P Kenyon.
