A few months ago, the Daily Mirror published reports that Andriy Shevchenko was a “snitch” as he was informing Roman Abramovich of any possible events or conversations in the Chelsea dressing room and also that he wanted Carlo Ancelotti as manager of Chelsea.

Naturally, a host of other tabloids and broadsheets got copy out of this and of course, grateful oppo fans and the rest of the plebian masses, desperate for all the slops that Fleet St serve them up when it’s something negative about our club, swallowed this up as fact and enjoyed having a poke at Chelsea fans and theorizing about Mourinho´s departure.

 

Shevchenko didn´t stand around with his arms folded – his lawyers were soon onto this example of “intrepid journalism” and of course, the lie was exposed and an apology issued.

 

The Mirror were obviously somewhat irked at being embarrassed in this way and in the true English media fashion of persecution of anything Chelsea, decided to issue yet ANOTHER report just a few weeks later that Shevchenko had indeed complained about Mourinho and cited a German website as its source.  The website in question was closed down just days later, but this didn´t stop the usual suspects (you know who you are) reveling in yet more Chelsea “scandal” and championing this rag’s “information” as yet more evidence of the troubles within our club.  How these people can be so gullible is beyond me but I suppose these revisionists of football are so desperate, so bitter and so frustrated that any morsel of negativity is eaten up gratefully from the media trough – I can’t help having a smile about how stupid they must feel now!

 Anyway, here’s the apology: 

ANDRIY SHEVCHENKO - APOLOGY 27/04/2007

ON March 9 we published an article entitled "Sheva" "Yes, it’s true, I've complained about Chelsea manager" "Jose never spoke to me and played me out of position" "No secret Roman wanted me more than Mourinho".

 

We claimed that Andriy Shevchenko had "lifted the lid on his stormy career at Chelsea" and that he had given an interview to a German TV website www.sport.ard.de in which he had complained about his manager Jose Mourinho and revealed that he had had played for better coaches and would have been happy to have left Chelsea on loan last January.

 Having investigated the matter further we accept that these allegations are untrue and that Andriy Shevchenko did not give this interview to the German website or make any of the statements falsely attributed to him. We apologise to Andriy for any distress and embarrassment this article has caused him.    I’ll use one Chelsea fan’s words to conclude: “Sad commentary on the state of journalism when some arse-wipe rag can print any old shoite it pleases and then need only toss out a disingenuous apology afterward. I wouldn't believe anything associated with that publication ... least of all the apology.”
