Paul Sturrock has signed two players on deadline day. Sunderland striker Daryl Murhpy has joined until January 2nd and Leicester left-back Peter Gilbert has joined on loan with view to a permanent move to Hillsborough. Contrary to reports, Bury midfielder Simon Whaley has not signed for the club.

Paul Sturrock has completed a double deadline day swoop for Sunderland striker Daryl Murphy and Leicester City left-back Peter Gilbert.

The 22-year-old Murphy has signed on loan until January 2nd after making just four appearances for the black cats this season. Manager Mick McCarthy signed the irishman in the summer for £100,000 from Irish club Waterford.

Manager McCarthy said: ''I have agreed to let Murphy go to Sheffield Wednesday. I've been happy with what he's done here but he needs more action in a decent level before we feel he is ready to be a regular in the team here.''

Peter Gilbert has signed on loan from Leicester City with a view to a permanent loan. Manager Paul Sturrock worked with Gilbert at Plymouth Argyle where he played 84 times for the Pilgrims. Gilbert has been limited to starts at the Walker's stadium and will be hoping to make a big impact at S6.

Both players should be included in the squad to face Stoke City on Saturday.

Contrary to reports, a £300,000 move for highly-rated Bury midfielder Simon Whaley has not gone ahead.
