Owls wary of cock-a-hoop Coventry
COVENTRY head for Hillsborough on Saturday hoping that the 3-1 win against Watford last night will prove to have a been a springboard for their season.
The Sky Blues have now jumped five points clear of the Owls, who will have hoped for a different result at the Ricoh Arena, one that would have left them with a chance of overtaking Micky Adams's side in two days time. But Coventry notched only their second win in 10 matches, and Adams said: "We are all delighted with the three points.
"We were all disappointed with the defeat against Hull - 2-0 last Saturday - and hopefully this can be a springboard for our season."
Watford manager Adrian Boothroyd saw his side pay the penalty for a painfully slow start, which dashed their hopes of returning to third place.
Coventry were 2-0 up inside 20 minutes. Dele Adebola opened the scoring in the second minute when he pounced on a loose ball, and young Irishman Willo Flood drilled a low shot in at the far post.
Watford's Ashley Young fired a superb goal six minutes into the second half, but Gary McSheffrey finished the Hornets off.
Boothroyd said: "Coventry had a game plan and we simply didn't deal with it."
In the first half, the Coventry stadium was plunged into darkness when the lights failed for a couple of seconds.
Wednesday Reserves lost 1-0 at Huddersfield last night, to a second-half penalty by Mark Hudson. An earlier spot kick by Junior Mendes by saved by Chris Adamson. The Owls team included Lee Bullen and Richie Partridge. Danny Reet hit a post, and Partridge, Reet and Spurr forced good saves from Town goalkeeper Phil Senior.
