The Clarets suffered a second successive defeat in 3 days at Turf Moor. Burnley wered reduced to ten men in the second half when Micah Hyde was shown a red card and Steve Cotterill was also sent into the stands in the first half. Burnley lined up in their usual 4-5-1 formation for the 6th straight game but started poorly. We fell behind to Iwan Roberts deflected goal after 5 minutes. John McGreal was almost pushed into the advertising boards yet the referee gave Gillingham a throw in. Steve Cotterill was incensed by this decision and had some strong words for the 4th offical who called over referee Beeby. Beeby sent Cotterill into the Bob Lord stand.

The Clarets conceded a second goal in the second half when Darren Byfield broke the offside trap to score. We gave away a penalty a short time later which was saved by Danny Coyne, the assistant referee signalled to Beeby that the kick should be re-taken but this was also saved by Coyne.

Ian Moore scored a late consolation for Burnley who now have a break due to Internationals being played over the weekend.
