Burnley mounted a brave rear-guard action to prise a precious point from a tough clash at Derby. The Clarets found themselves under increasing pressure from the hosts, still looking for their first home league win of the season.

Well that was much ado about nothing, I thought the idea of this game was if you wear a claret shirt you pass it to a claret shirt?

Vast improvement on the last two home games, still a mile off two years ago though.
Respect the point.

So I believe! That's a solid point regardless of performance. I was convinced Joey would get at least 30 minutes tonight, he can only improve the team. I guess Dyche must think he isn't fully ready yet.

Midfield and defence tightened up considerably on the last two home games, happy with that point and the way we defended. Only those who didn't see the last two home games, when we were outplayed for long periods by Wednesday and MK Dons, would have been dismayed by that performance.
As I keep saying, we are nowhere near where we were two years ago, but we're still well organised and hard to beat, which it seems might just be enough in this division.

Two things that are very positive tonight, an away clean sheet, and the bench.... We do have depth.
Joey will be given a minimum of 20 minutes against Reading, and my guess is can he do much more, will he start?

Sean Dyche is loyal to his players, I'd be surprised to see him change things from the start, but once Joey is in and fit for 90 minutes it would be daft not to start him.
That was absolute dross.
I know I might be in a minority of one but I want to be entertained. This side has no spark, no creativity and therefore creates few, if any chances. I know, I know ...... we had a couple of chances that Boyd/Vokes managed to screw up but personally I'm fed up of Dyche's style. Sideways/back/forwards 5 yards/sideways/back... HOOF. Repeat ad infinitum.
Yes, I'm aware it's an away point/at Derby/ we're 3rd in the table/we didn't concede blah blah blah.

Unfortunately football is becoming more and more boring as the money men take over. Results are all that matter not entertainment.
Better start watching RL it is not as effected yet. I recommend watching the Rhinos.

"Good point" yes but to be honest that was a point we didnt deserve, as a game it was a shocker and I don't know how we managed to keep a clean sheet, a few decent saves from Heaten was about the only highlight of a dismal performance. No point singling out the poor performances, it would take far too long!

I'll take the point all week after that but if we wish to stay at the top end we are going to have to improve. Barton and Marney will be massive improvements and I do think the middle of the park is where all the problems start.

There really wasn't that much difference in the level of performance last night and that of the previous two home games. Once Gray went off the attacking threat was virtually non- existent, and Derby are a better team than MK Dons and Wednesday, so we nicked just a point from the game instead of the three we nicked from each of the two previous games.
Strange how so many posters who were happy with the results last week, despite the poor performances, aren't so happy now. What's changed, what's the problem, that was a bloody good point, picked up despite not playing well. What happened to "It's the mark of a good team, picking up points when you're not playing well." ?

The problem is BC that I didn't see the previous two performances and had I and I considered them to be of a similar standard, then I would also have commented accordingly

My main point in all this is that (as Tom Jones said) it's not unusual. Virtually every game we play, home and away, we start at snail's pace hoping to keep it tight and hoping something comes our way - hoping, not actually trying very hard to create. I despair that set-pieces have become our main threat. Whilst obviously playing against better teams last year, that's how we played then - sideways, backwards, then (usually) a hoof and hope for the best - that's one reason we scored so few goals. I know Marney was a big loss but it's not as though we were playing pretty stuff through the middle with the ball on the deck when he was in the team. Can anyone remember when a Dyche side played thrilling, attacking footie and put the opposition to the sword? Having followed BFC since the early 60s I know things have been much worse and folk will always point to results, results, results. Personally I'd swap a few of these drab points here and there for a good old-rip-roaring 3-3, or even a 6-5 loss at Grimsby under Stan - I was there for that one too.

I'm saying CW the issue is one of creativity, ball retention and attacking prowess. I believe that with no real CM the ball is hit up to Vokes etc and comes straight back. When we have Gray due to his pace and the way he plays on the shoulder he give defenders something to think about and can run through onto balls knocked over the top and flick ons. It isn't pretty but needs must. IMHO if we get genuine CM's in the middle then suddenly we can play through the middle, we have our better players out wide - and we still have the longer option at times.

I think you've hit the nail on the head CW, most fans who don't see a game just look at the result and dismiss/ignore the reports on the performance, as happened last week, then they see just how poorly we are performing and seem shocked. Felt sorry for Hennings yesterday. Up against possibly the best centre back in the league with balls being lumped up for 60 mins.

We are a direct team, no doubt about it.
However our strengths two years ago were pace up front and midfielders getting up in support.
Hennings had neither of them yesterday. He probably won't have either on Saturday either to be honest.

Without Gray (or ings) we don't have the right type of forward.
We need a decent central midfield, wingers getting crosses in (and full backs). Unless dyche fancies a change of system - which we don't currently seem to have the personnel for.

As Sam Allardyce said, sticking to 4 4 2 cost Burnley their place in the prem.Nothing changes.
Playing 4 4 2 got us promoted two years ago.
Hopefully it will again this year.

2 years ago....time and tactics move on.We were different now we are known.We had goalscorers in our prem side and we didn't score enough.

I'm with you there, Dyche is very much results focussed rather than performances, if we perform too, bonus.
It will take a poor result for him to change it I reckon, and at the moment we're getting the results so Barton will have to wait for his chance to get in the strarting eleven.
He wasn't that loyal to Kightly last season, he was even playing Barnes on the wing instead of him at one point. I think he's been sticking with the current team, despite the poor performances, not necessarily because they've been winning although that obviously helps, but because they're the best team he can put out. As soon as he thinks he can improve this team, like when Joey's match fit, he will do, loyalty won't come into it.
From what i saw on monday we spent more time giving the ball to the opposition rather than them winning it.. Definitely need some midfield than can keep hold of the ball and distiribute it to a forward instead of the long hoof upfield.. After seeing that i would get Barton in asap if only for half a game ..
I know Dyche is big on fitness but Barton surely can't be far away.
He's been here nearly a month and I'm sure I read he did a bit of pre season training with another club.
Unless he's been on the lash all summer he must be in good enough shape.

Surely he either starts or comes on at some point on Saturday, I can't imagine that we're going to keep him under wraps any longer. If he isn't capable of at least 20 minutes by now he never will be.
Yeah i think that's what'll happen - 20 minutes sub appearance against Reading on Saturday, then he'll start the next game, with Kightly making way.
Dyche had no issue dropping Kightly last season after Stoke, when he was arguably our best player on that day.

I doubt he'll start all season, unless we get injuries and its needs must.
I've only seen the lad in one sub appearance - looked a long way off being ready to me.
Pity we're out of the Micky Mouse Cup, it would have been useful to give him some game time, get him closer to match fitness. I suppose if Juke hadn't picked up his injury he might have been loaned out by now.
