With Burnley's striking resources stretched to the limits, four-goal hero Jay Rodriguez stepped up with a little help from Charlie Austin and Ross Wallace to fire the Clarets into the second round of the Carling Cup.
Martin Paterson's cruel injury absence has put the onus on Rodriguez and Austin, and the pair responded with five goals between them as the Clarets finally won a gripping tie in extra-time. Rodriguez claimed his first senior hat-trick, including two penalties, on his way to a first four goal tally for the Clarets since Paul Barnes' five-timer in October 1996, as he opened his account for the season in stunning style.
