The crestfallen Clarets were hit by a double bolt from the blue as their away-day frustrations continued at the Riverside Stadium.
Burnley were within touching distance of their first away success of the season in the Championship after Andre Bikey had headed them in front in the second half on Teesside. But Estonian international Tarmo Kink then came off the bench to turn the game on its head and ease the pressure on Boro boss Gordon Strachan with two stunning strikes.
