Neil Harris is going to have be patient, according to player boss Dennis Wise, if he wants to break Teddy Sheringham's goalscoring record. The striker needs just one goal to edge in front of West Ham's former England international. Dennis Wise has spoken about how Neil Harris will have to be patient in his quest to better Teddy Sheringham’s league goalscoring record.

And the Millwall manager has also accepted that if his strikers’ mis-fire he will pay the consequences with his job.

Harris’ header against Cardiff in October was his 93rd in league games to equal Sheringham’s all-time scoring feat.

However, just a week later Harris injured his calf when deployed on the left wing at Stoke, and though he marked his return to fitness with a brace for the reserves last week, the 27-year-old has still not yet returned to the team sheet.

The signing of Scott Dobie and return to fitness of Danny Dichio and Paul Ifill has further reduced Harris’ first team chances, and Wise admits he may have trouble forcing his way back.

He said: “It's not difficult to leave Neil out. If he's not playing well he's not going to get in the team. If someone has scored two goals in 28 games what can I do about that?

“That tells me I need to go out and get another striker and that's what I've done. I can't wait for Neil to come good because my job is on the line.

“It's about getting results and unfortunately he hasn't done well for a while.

“He wants to play and I understand that. But it's not all about Neil. It's about the team winning.

“Neil got injured at Stoke and the team has done very well since then, so he will have to wait his turn like everyone else.

“I haven't got any worries about the way I'm going about it. The people I have brought in have added quality to this squad and made us stronger.”
